What pet names do you call your kids?

Just out of interest really and wondering if pet names are class-based. I grew up working class and was called love, lovee, baby, babe and variations of those by my parents, depending on how old I was. I’d say I’ve gone up a couple or so class notches since becoming parent..maybe not quite to the realms of middle class, more just graduated from Asda to Tesco! But I call my 4 yo DD nicknames based on her real name, baby, bubba, sweetheart when she’s upset, bum bum face sometimes to make her laugh, monkey, sometimes sweet pea. I feel like darling is very middle class or am I wrong about that? I’ve only ever heard middle class parents call their kids darling. And love and babe is more working class, both make me cringe a bit (maybe cos of over use from my own childhood! But I couldn’t ever call my own DD that) so also wondering do you find yourself calling your DC the names your parents called you as a kid or actively avoiding them?!

Darling, sweetheart, sweetie, my love...plus a variety of names based on their actual names eg Lanabanana, lanzabonanza, bromaz...my own dm used to call me loobiemoobara so it's obviously in the family😂

YourCraftyGreyOP · 06/04/2025 19:26

Darling
baby
sausage
my love
my sweet

and nicknames.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 06/04/2025 19:30

The usual pet, petal, love, duck, sweetie, etc. Plus Bubbala, Munchkin, Chuckles, toots, huggums.
Hisname-joop (eldest son)
His name catkins (youngest son)
Tbh it's endless shit. They answer to anything.

They are in their 20s now and have both decided to just go with my ridiculousness.

Edit again. Me and my sister were pest rat (me) and crabs (her) so I think my kids got off lightly.

What’s with all the bum nicknames? Why did you decide to chose that to call your child? I don’t think it’s at all cute or funny and thankfully never heard anyone call their child ‘bum face’ in real life.

I call my kids ‘sausage’ mainly.. no idea what class that makes me..

Me too! Or pest.

kidditsonyou · 06/04/2025 19:34

I definitely use darling but see it as just being very English rather than only used by a certain class.
Also honey, lovey, sweetheart, baby, doll, baby doll, angel

SomethingAboutNothing · 06/04/2025 19:36

Sweetpea, my love, pumpkin, darling, little bear, bear cub, el bearo, I'm sure there are more 😂

Bum bum face is awful sorry. What has class got to do with nicknames? Mumsnet seems to love talking about class but tesco rather than asda is a weird way to describe class at all. Middle class people shop everywhere in reality. I call my girls darling sometimes and I'm not middle class. Maybe I'm just a classy person anyway...sweetie, sweetheart, girlie, kiddo, chicken, chick pea, sausage, cheeky monkey and they're own private nicknames based on their names.

You’re clearly not familiar with a 4-year-old’s sense of humour..you should hear what I get called! - wee wee head, poo poo brain, fart face. It’s called banter. And banter with a 4 yo is very much toilet humour based. I never said pet names are classed based, I posed the question as to whether they might be. And Asda and Tesco are excellent indicators of class (also err I was kinda joking) they are though - ever seen 15p noodles in Tesco? Nope didn’t think so. Maybe you’re not British but if you are you’d have to have been living under a rock for the last 10 years to not know certain supermarkets pretty much define the class system in this country. Imagine Keir Starmer got caught in Asda, guaranteed front page of every tabloid the next day!

Sausage mainly, but also babe, bubba, bubs, angel, my love and my darling.

marmi · 06/04/2025 19:49

Mouse and Bear. 7 year old twins. Mouse used to squeak when she was a baby and Bear grunted. It suits them and they love it.

whatsinanameeh · 06/04/2025 20:01

The boy, little babe, darling, a sing song version of his name and plook-picker

My family is scum-class and I married a working class. Together we hope our little plook picker may one day be middle class or possibly marry into it, if the plooks ever desist.

My parents just called us fucking shits

Gobolino80 · 06/04/2025 20:50

I called my daughter Squidge as she was a very squidgy baby. I call her son Spud and Sausage, both suit him well

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 06/04/2025 20:57

Both of mine get sweetheart and Kidda. DS gets Son quite a lot. No idea what class we are - lower middle?

Ladamesansmerci · 06/04/2025 21:01

At the moment my 10mo DD gets 'Stinky', 'Scalliwag', 'Chicken' and 'Angel' a lot 😁

Screwyoutwat · 06/04/2025 21:04

Dd has always been Boo even though she's 22. She will always be my Boo ❤️

Heatherjayne1972 · 06/04/2025 21:05

Tinker bell, terwilliger and salmon plus derivatives of their names

Llamo · 06/04/2025 21:10

Both DS's (both under 5) get - Hunky chunky monkey, baby man, mini mango, my wee pickled pump, chicken bum...

Iamacatslave · 06/04/2025 21:11

Darling and the little cherub.

xWren · 06/04/2025 21:11

I mostly call my DD(7) “darling”.
I called her “baby” until she was around 4 with a throw-in of “honey” and then it switched to darling.

I call my DP “bab” or “love”.

casapenguin · 06/04/2025 21:13

Missing the point but I’m fascinated by the Asda/tesco class distinction 😂 where does Morrisons fit into this? I think I’m too middle class to be able to tell.

Adelaide66 · 06/04/2025 21:19

Always Lammie. My lambkins are my beloved.

FairyBatman · 06/04/2025 21:19

Spud,
tiny menace - although recently upgraded to medium menace when we got a kitten, his first and seconds names as initials,
trumpet bum
baby boy - although I get stink eye when I use that he’s 8 and therefore far too cool for that one

StarDolphins · 06/04/2025 21:22

I call my DD either darling or beaut!

under my breath or in my head I call her high maintenance though

Mamadothehump · 06/04/2025 21:25
