How do you all keep your cars clean

coffeegirl73 · 06/04/2025 18:16

All the car washes round be me seem to have closed down? I cannot find one. I’ve been washing it occasionally with a sponge but it takes me ages plus I can’t reach the roof. And then to do all the windows as well and then the inside… how does everyone else manage now all the car washes seem to be gone!

We have fours cars and two sons. The sons are required to clean one car per week between them so all the cars get done about once a month.

Soon we will have only 3 cars. I haven’t decided whether that means the cars get cleaned more often or the sons get a week off once a month.

Hosepipe, bucket and sponge - DH does it

I hoover and wipe the interiors but tbh the interior I kinda clean as I go….. I keep a soft cloth in the glove box and if it’s getting dusty and the windows gloomy I just give it a wipe over when I get in.

only takes DH about 20 minutes to do the outside every couple of weeks.

ZookeeperSE · 11/04/2025 20:12

We used to pay the DDs to do all of the cars, inside and out, as part of their monthly jobs for pocket money, but since they went off to Uni, we take it to the jet wash for the outside and I do the inside. The first time DH did the jet wash it wasn't updating the minutes properly so he thought it wasn't working and kept topping it up. It suddenly spluttered in to life and he had 32 minutes of clean on the clock 😂 Car's never been so shiny

I simply do not. I’ve never washed my own car and I’ve been driving 13 years. We have a wash bay in our yard so my husband washes it for me, when he has time, and before I met my husband, my younger brother used to wash my cars for a fiver a time 🤣 husband doesn’t wash it overly often, so it’s often absolutely filthy, what with living both on a farm very rurally and by the coast but I don’t really care.

DustyMaiden · 11/04/2025 20:20

I have a DH

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 11/04/2025 20:31

DH is a very keen car "detailer" as he calls it. There's a cupboard full of all sorts of shit in the garage but in fairness, my car is always immaculate inside and out. If only he tackled anything inside the house with the level of enthusiasm he has for cleaning cars............ Hmm

Chemenger · 11/04/2025 20:36

I take mine to the village jet wash, 4 minutes for £1, can do foam and rinse in that time. It’s parked beside the sea so it needs doing if it’s windy to get the salt off.

LimeJellyforBrains · 11/04/2025 21:22

Near me nearly all the multi-storey car parks have a car washing service area. Is that an option for you?

Can't comment on prices etc as I've never used them.

I'm another 'don't wash my car' person but must admit even I am getting fed up of the windows being covered in (Saharan?) dust, and it hasn't rained recently!

caringcarer · 11/04/2025 21:40

No. When it rains it gets a wash.

Vitrolinsanity · 11/04/2025 21:58

I take it to a place that some MN posters would be calling HMRC on even while they were being soaped and jet washed. The guys do a banging job inside and out. I take Ddog because the soap and spray fascinates him.

Dbank · 11/04/2025 22:19

Buy a decent jet wash, foam bottle and a soft bush, and wipe down with a Auto-Glym Auqa-dry cloth.

Takes about 30 minutes

vipersnest1 · 11/04/2025 22:33

I have a car that I really like. I wash it with snow foam and enjoy the way it looks afterwards - it’s a pearlescent white so looks great when it’s clean. (I used to take my last one to a hand car wash but stopped when they got a stupid drying machine that you had to drive through ridiculously slowly for it to work.)
Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Time40 · 11/04/2025 22:45

I wash mine. I don't mind doing it too much - it's better than doing most indoor household jobs. It's way, way better than having to cook! If I'm feeling nice I'll wash DP's too, but I have to get the kickstep out to reach the roof of his.

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 12/04/2025 08:06

We have a company come to work to valet and wash cars.

taxguru · 06/04/2025 18:18

Don't you have any garages around you that have DIY car washes? That's what I use. All our garages have them except for Asda's.

But yes, the hand car washes where a handful of people do it for you have indeed disappeared - probably the tax/immigration people have finally got onto them as there were strong suspicions of money laundering and modern slavery.

Edited

We have several where I live - usually near or opposite a supermarket. I hate washing my car and am happy to pay a tenner for someone else to do it, and make a better job of it than I can.

Motherknowsrest · 06/04/2025 22:38

Doesn't everyone end up with moss growing on their car if they don't wash it every few weeks? Mine keeps trying to grow it's own eco system. I can't help think it's probably not going to do the nooks and crannies any good if moss is getting in there.

Or rust from all the salt that we have had spread on our roads this winter.

DilemmaDelilah · 12/04/2025 08:20

Simple answer is - we dont! However we have a huge variety of options for car washing where we live. There is a hand car wash not too far from us. One of the city centre car parks has a hand car wash section. Morrison's has a hand car wash section in their car park. They also have a jet wash in their garage. The industrial estate has an automatic car wash, as does Sainsburys, and there is a garage near us that has an automatic car wash as well.

Once or twice a year we get a chap who does a mobile wash and valet in to give the car a really good clean inside and out, and I'm thinking of suggesting that my grandson might like to clean the car for some money - I know he's trying to save up for something.

TheCurious0range · 12/04/2025 08:23

I go through one of the drive through mechanical type car washes and clean the inside myself , we have a cordless hoover with a mini motorised head attachment though which makes it easier. Then use car interior leather wipes on the seats and a jay cloth and some m&S multipurpose almond cleaning spray on the dash etc (because it smells nice)

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 12/04/2025 08:35

Husband does it

Boredlass · 12/04/2025 08:37

I do it once a week and polish it once a month. It’s black so I like to keep it clean. I love it so I want to look after it

Nannyfannybanny · 12/04/2025 12:30

Apart from our house, the car is the most expensive thing we have purchased,we want it looking decent, keeping it's value. Most insurance companies these days want a photo pre claim of your vehicle,to make sure it's kept in good condition. Ours is also pearl white.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/04/2025 12:32

My car is grey. I buy grey cars. They hide dirt better than any other colour.

The inside of my car is always clean but I drive on some dirty sites most days.

Sheknowsaboutme · 12/04/2025 13:18

I do it myself.

MyKingdomForACat · 12/04/2025 13:43

Sortalike · 06/04/2025 18:40

I go all bougie and get it washed at a very posh garden centre once a month. Meet up with a friend, have a coffee, admire plants I will not be able to keep alive, and hey presto pretty sparkly car.

Several hand carwashes around me have shut down - I believe they were raided by immigration, according to local press.

Wonder if it’s the same one I discovered the other week. 🤔

gamerchick · 12/04/2025 13:45

I don't. When I get fed up, I'll take husband out in it and he'll make the noises about skips on wheels.

Then the magic fairies come and it's gleaming Grin
