The Birds in my garden are all out and enjoying the breezy sunshine this morning. This is what I’ve caught in 16 minutes… would love to see others’ lists!
pS the chiff chaff is particularly noisy

Tits, great and blue; robin; jackdaw; wood pigeon. Not very exciting but the tits and robin sound lovely (and loud in the case of the robin). Oh and just added a greenfinch.

We have blackbirds, magpies and jays as other regulars. Another bird app identified a goldcrest the other days - plausible as I’ve seen one before but not for ages. I hope to - so small and adorable.

The likely birds feature is a bit broad brush! If I go a couple of miles up the road encountering a pheasant is pretty likely, but not in my garden. And my chances of hearing a cormarant are very slim 😆

VenusClapTrap · 06/04/2025 11:39

Another new one for me - meadow pipit!
Now my tea is done and I really must go and do boring essential stuff. Sadly.

I am not at all sure about our oystercatcher. We are about as far from the sea as it is possible to be in the uk!

You can find oystercatchers inland. DH's pal lives in a house by a river and he sometimes sees them in the water meadow bordering his garden.

I've just installed the app because of this thread and I'm already obsessed! It's so lovely! I've had a chiff chaff, blue tit, black cap, robin, crow so far.

Delphigirl · 06/04/2025 12:51

It’s so great isn’t it @Popfan ! I love taking it on holiday too (with mixed results) some areas even if you download the correct region it doesn’t ID much - North Africa for instance. But in Europe and North America it is fab!
I’ve learn a lot from it.

Interesting - because it has caught them a few times so maybe it’s right. No river near but but a couple of large ponds (boating size) in land abutting us.

I didn’t know this app existed. Thank you, my boy is only 13 months but he honestly loves “Birdies” so much already so will be nice to inform him what birdies we can hear aswel as see now 🙂

RainOnTins · 06/04/2025 14:11

Just gone into my garden, inspired by this thread, and found it eerily quiet. Think the birds must be taking a midday siesta.

All I can hear is the soft song of a bullfinch. Usually that’s barely audible over all the other birdsong in my garden, but right now the bird is giving a solo performance.

Delphigirl · 06/04/2025 14:12

Oooh look at you with your white wagtail @CraicBird ! Nice!

Delighted @ProudMummyxo , might be the beginning of a lifelong love of birds for him.

Re the ostercatcher:

It's not infallible. Last year it identified our whingeing spaniel puppy as a "long tailed tit".

To be fair, it had a point...

🤣

The birds come and go in my garden. I reckon they all go round the neighbourhood feeders in a big gang throughout the day.

@proudmummyxo you should absolutely listen to birder Professor Carl Jones on Desert island discs a couple of weeks back

HollyBerryz · 06/04/2025 14:42

Ohh I need to look at this. I don't see much in my garden, blackbird, pigeon, the occasional starling, sometimes a Robin and the little 'dicky birds' so it will be interesting to see what the app says.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 06/04/2025 17:47

I downloaded it on the back of this thread. Very noisy at dawn and dusk here so I’ll try again later but it identified a brambling and said it was rare so that’s exciting (if it’s accurate)

RaininSummer · 06/04/2025 18:07

You are lucky to have such a huge variety. I haven't been studying my yard for any length of time today but have seen sparrows, blue tits, pigeons and gulls.

MagpiePi · 06/04/2025 10:47

Oystercatcher? Do you live by the sea?

I can’t get Merlin to identify birds of prey. They was something whistling the other day and it just ignored it.

Merlin does not recognise starling whistles. I don’t know why, they are very distinctive

ForeveraBluebird · 06/04/2025 18:12

How nice to see the house martins and swallows darting around again. I’m always abit sad when they leave, always lovely to see them return

Gundogday · 06/04/2025 18:12

Love the Merlin app.

Stopped on my dog walk on Friday and heard a wren (beautiful), great tit and chiff chaff.

I was only introduced to this app last year, and feel quite chuffed that I can now identify a chiff chaff. Wouldn’t recognise one if I saw one, but can now recognise it’s sound.

So are we but there are sometimes a few at a nearby reservoir.

Stanislas · 06/04/2025 18:20

I can silence the lot of them by just turning the app on. I’ve stood hidden and silent in the garage but they are doing it on purpose I’m sure. Drives me mad. DH doesn’t have this effect on them he’s always trotting in saying oh it’s a chiff chaff

WildfiresofUmbrage · 06/04/2025 18:21

@Delphigirl we have a pair of grey wagtails who nest in our garden every year. It’s a wonderful moment to look out of the window and see one 'dipping' away. Last year we finally managed to see one of the young fledging - we've never succeeded before.

Spaceman101 · 06/04/2025 18:22

I recorded these the other morning. Surprised me how many were out there

It picked up a skylark for me this morning, much to my husband’s delight that he correctly identified it.

We get oystercatchers and we are inland but on an estuary.
