Is anyone in a mundane, low stress job?

LegoTherapy · 05/04/2025 10:24

Every time somebody posts about their job, especially if comparing themselves to a SAHM, or talking about their DH they always state how their job is high pressure, full-on, very busy, very important etc. They usually earn a lot too but that goes hand in hand I suppose with these high-flying jobs.
It got me thinking about if there are any mumsnetters in mundane, low stress jobs that aren’t “very important” (I think all jobs are important both to the individual and society as a whole) because nobody ever talks about it. It’s as though posters have to validate their situation by saying how stressed and important they are.
I was a nurse and thinking about it it was very busy and demanding but I didn’t really think about it at the time. It’s only looking back. I didn’t consider myself important either. Most people are easily replaced in jobs.
I expect mumsnet has a higher than average amount of higher earners with very important, very busy, very stressful jobs. I suppose they could also be mundane so maybe mundane wasn’t the right word to use.
is your job, or your DH’s relatively mundane, unimportant and low pressure? If so, what do you/they do? Similarly, what hobbies do you/they have? it’s obviously cycling.

Yup. I’m a technical writer, wfh, 9-5, no clients, I don’t even have a phone number.

Earn c.£80k and zero stress. Unbelievably lucky but also kind of bored so I might shoot myself in the foot and go back to client facing…

Can you also tell us more about this?!

How do you become one and what does it mean?!

From mine and others perspective you are living the dream and long may you continue to do so. I salute you.

That sounds amazing. How long have you been in the job to get that salary and how did you get into it?

I'm a radiographer, at times my career has been low stress and mundane but variable. I did a couple of years in research, just the imaging side not the academic. So it was interesting to begin with then was menotonous but gave me lots of mental reserve for at home. But it was too soul sucking boring for me long term.

I was a sahm for 11 years,now I’m a evening nursery cleaner,I guess to some it’s mundane,gives me a purpose though.

I always wondered about a radiographer's job! I've had lots of experience (unfortunately as a patient) and it's intrigued me.

I work 4 days a week in a nhs clinical job. Lovely client group, no managerial responsibility. Community role so organise my own diary. Peaks and troughs of workload but I ride those out. My previous job - same pay level but high stress, burnout and affecting my sleep. When I feel like I am unfulfilled in my current job I remember my old one and count my blessings!

I am never going to earn mega bucks, but I have everything I need and feel no need to kick my career up a gear.

How do you get into this, just out of interest (I'm not looking to change careers)?

Edit: I see that it's of people asked you the same thing, ignore me.

I am a car park attendant for the National Trust. It is great, out in the fresh air, talking to people, stroking dogs etc. No stress and don't think about it when I am at home. Quieter shifts can be a bit boring but shifts are only 3 hours long so not a big deal. It is very low paid though.

For those asking, a lot of blood sweat and tears to get there! Chartered accountancy and tax exams, many years doing crazy hours at big4 firms, and getting lucky that the job came up (there’s 2 roles in my field).

For anyone from a legal background it’s similar to professional support lawyer, where I do a lot of technical research and draft case summaries. Will probably be replaced by AI at some point in the not distant future….

I would love this as a job!
A few weeks ago I set up an alert on indeed for Calke Abbey for that exact thing ☺️

@Mushroo I am a lawyer and no offence to professional support lawyers but I could not do it. I'd be so bored I'd shoot myself too. AI is a concern.

I work overseas in a warm country in the swimming pool industry. Sounds perfect, right? 😅

There was a segment on LBC yesterday that touched (sort of) on this kind of topic - the discussion was about the binmen's strike in Birmingham and how this is a job that is typically portrayed as 'menial' and 'unskilled' with the subtext of 'anyone who does this as a job has to have failed in life' kind of thing. And yet, when these workers aren't there doing the job, the whole infrastructure of the city falls apart, so there is a strong argument to be made that these are actually the types of job that keep the country running and are actually vitally important.

One guy called in to say that if his CEO disappeared for a day people would barely notice, but the day that the cleaner was off sick and the toilets didn't get cleaned had everyone noticing and complaining. It's an interesting point.

Oh yes, I was listening to this and really struck by it. If the refuse collectors, carers, cleaners, social workers and retail workers all decided to stop working we’d be up s*it creek. I wish that they were more valued.

MurdoMunro · 05/04/2025 21:04

So is that it @LegoTherapy? You’ve got all these people responding to your question but you’ve not responded at all. Not what you wanted to hear or just not interested?

I get really pissed off when I get sucked into one of these, I feel like I’m getting used for something I don’t understand. If we had longer on the edit onto I’d go back and delete my post.

LegoTherapy · 05/04/2025 23:58

@MurdoMunroI’ve literally just read all the posts now. I’ve been busy in my own low paid job, then with my children all day.
Thank you to everyone who has posted, it’s really interesting to read what you all do. I’ve no idea what a technical writer is though. What does it entail?
My dream job is to work for Lego somehow. Design and research maybe but not shop floor because I’d be bored. I like to be mentally busy if not physically busy too but don’t want to be terribly important with lots of responsibility.

OMG can I have your job? You can have mine....(slightly less salary and all client facing!!)

MinnieMountain · 06/04/2025 06:37

I’m an auditor at a property solicitors. £45k FTE but I work 3 days a week. It’s largely low stress.

Most people I was a trainee solicitor with a senior partners now. I’ve just never been that bothered.

Rowgtfc72 · 06/04/2025 06:50

@Lookingforwardto2025 I would love that job! Lanhydrock would be great. I'd even take my local, Gunby.

I pack fish. Slightly more than minimum wage, 6am start so still some day left when I get out at 2pm. No weekends or overtime.
We're not extravagant so can afford a car and holidays.
Completely stress free. Clock out- job done.

All the jobs mentioned so far still sound fancy. I work at Amazon. You can’t get more mundane than that but I love it and it has great benefits.

@bored1234 at an Amazon fulfillment centre? I thought those people are so stressed they cannot even take toilet breaks?
