Do you have an oiled iroko worktop?

We just finished oiling our new worktop and have started gingerly using it. We used Osmo oil.

If you have one, how careful do you have to be with water? Eg can you lift a soapy pot out of the sink and put it on the worktop to scrub inside it? How quickly do you have to wipe up splashes? Or do you just treat it like a normal worktop?

I just treat it like a normal worktop. No issues in three years, although I should re-oil it soon!

We moved but used to have one , including the draining board . The only thing I didn't do was put on hot pan direct from the stove on it , water was fine but I'd always wipe it up before leaving the kitchen .

My parent’ iroko worktops
are nearly 50 years old now, and
still looking good. My mum
was always quick to wipe up spills but it’s really only round the sinks
that there’s any sign of water damage. No marks from pots, and I don’t believe no one ever plonked
a hot one down in all that time! She did oil them occasionally (every couple of years?)

No, I haven't.

I can’t remember if ours is Iroko but we do use Osmo oil. We do have marks - they are all from rust - from tins that someone has left sitting in a damp spot, or the lid of a Le Creuset left drying, that sort of thing. Really hot stuff will also mark (darken) if left for too long.

Thank you this is all really helpful. So, water is generally okay so long as you wipe down at the end of your kitchen session?
No problem re the hot pans as they can't go on most worktops anyway so we aren't in the habit of doing that.

Mine is ten years old now and the only marks are from hot pans. My DP is very messy so stuff gets left on it all the time. I have a marble board next to the hob to try and minimise any hot pan activity but I’ve still made a couple of stupid mistakes over the years. The marks do fade out in time. I oil mine about once a year. Should do it more often but it looks fine.

Water is fine. It’s iron that isn’t. Oh, and wet dough can stain too, if it gets left on the surface for a while (think waffle machine drips, that sort of thing)

Handy to know, thank you!
