Ok mumsnet, help me with a 60th birthday gift because I'm stumped.
Recipient is male
Lives overseas and postage costs are horrendous
Is v wealthy and I can't match the type of gifts he will get from family and friends
Want something quirky, funny, unusual, not too expensive and small enough to post.
Thoughts?

a meaningful book? doesn't have to be a first edition, you can get signed, or just beautiful copies of a book he likes.

something personalised - am engraved pen or frame, or a leather bracelet with a personalised bead/s

if you've known him a long time then a picture which will bring back memories -you two together, a meaningful place, a piece of shared history, his childhood pet

hard to suggest funny without knowing what he'd find funny to be honest. a cuddly ferret? a bust of maggie thatcher? a dartboard with his exes face on it?

I often order from the country they're in for overseas friends to avoid the postage.

Can you share your budget? ‘Not too expensive’ means something different to everyone..

He's in the Middle East so postal options are a bit limited. Hmmm, maybe a first edition of a book. He likes to read.
I have him.a photo of his dog previously which he loved.

on etsy you can set the delivery location to (eg) UAE and order things like cushions in the shape of his dog, which will not be everyones cup of tea but meets quirky and funny. Well under budget and delivered direct.

Its he British or from elsewhere? You can get surface mail with royal mail and its cheaper than airmail. Takes longer. I often sent things much further afield than the Middle East. At best, they've taken a week to arrive, at worst, about 2mths. If you have plenty of time, you could save on postage, or find something from within his country to send him.

-British tea or a British type food hamper. Sometimes can be purchased locally.
-Gold leaf gardening gloves and secateurs- if he gardens?
-A man tin filled within something.
-Cook book
-Bottle of wine/whiskey from his year of birth- check its allowed in the country he lives in though!
-Hat/flat cap
-BBQ apron/tongs/chopping board

Does he enjoy reading and would he be bothered by second hand items?
For a reader the book subscriptions are great, you can put in his likes and they'll post a book every month. Not sure if theyd post to the middle east?

Bettysnow · 04/04/2025 21:15

An ancestry kit. Most people I know say they find it really interesting but never get around to buying one.

Hedjwitch · 04/04/2025 21:53

He's British.
Can't send alcohol.
Will look at book subscription..

A first/folio/nice edition of well known book published in 1965.
Or similar for an LP, but books are easier to post.

Darkclothes · 05/04/2025 10:44

Does he travel alot? A leather toiletry bag or luggage labels.
