Camping during Easter holidays

I know there is a topic for camping but it’s not as busy as here, anyone planning on camping in the Easter holidays? If you are what are you taking to help with cold nights and early mornings?

I never go until May, it’s too flipping cold at night! But I do have a little electric heater (if you have electric hook up) which works well.

WonderingWanda · 04/04/2025 20:11

Not this year but have done so. It was about -2 at night and we gave in and got a hook up and heater because it was too cold in the evenings without one.

You need memory foam self inflating mats not air beds. Hats, socks and lots of layers to wear in bed. Hot water bottles. Very thick sleeping bags. Down jackets. If you've got room another layer like a duvet to go over your sleeping bag. Hot chocolate.

I feel the cold and use a 4 season bag in August so this might be overkill for most people 🤣

Duvet to go over sleeping bag, hot water bottle and a thermos to fill with water before you go to bed so you can quickly refill the hot water bottle in the middle of the night.

We’re heading to north wales on Monday. We did north Yorkshire last year at the end of March.
we have EHU and a small heater, once we’re in for the night we wrap up warm in thick pj’s (knock off) oodies and have 3 season sleeping bags.
We line the floor of the bedroom with roll out mats and then all sleep off the floor on camp beds.
We were absolutely fine last year and I’m sure we will be again next week.
We take the kitchen kettle so it’s easy to have a coffee/hot chocolate when we wake up.

ProudCoralBear · 04/04/2025 21:37

I’m desperate to go as didn’t get chance to camp after august last year so feel like it’s been forever but I am worried about the kids being cold at night. Thanks for the tips so far

A site that allows campfires to sit round

Foam mats or other insulation on the floor of the tent. Cardboard is good, or the jigsaw foam play mats or interlocking foam workshop mats .

Insulated sleeping mats. SIMS, or roll out foam mats, or if you use air beds put yoga mats on top.

Fleece blankets under sleeping bags. (Good sleeping bags not crappy nylon Argos ones). Blankets or duvets on top.

Put pyjamas on under clothes early, before you get cold. Don’t go to bed cold: do star jumps if necessary.

Wear hat and loose warm socks in bed

Have bucket in tent for night wees

We are, will you have electric hook up? You could then take a heater to keep warm in the evening. I would make sure you have beds which are off the ground, like a camp bed and sim combo. Warm pyjamas, keep socks on, with sleeping bag and duvet on top.

AyeDeadOn · 04/04/2025 22:09

We are. I'm considering taking an electric throw to put over the kids.

Me and DH are braving the first week of the easter holidays down in Devon with a 1yo, 3yo, 5yo and 7yo 😬 Earliest we've ever done is late May to early September so hoping it won't be too cold. We've just bought us all season 3 sleeping bags to use on camp beds with a teddy fleece sheet on. Blanket if needed as well. Got the usual onesies for the children as well as oodies in case it's that cold. We always have EHU so have a small electric heater too. Also put something down on the floor. We use a combo of foam mats or tent carpet.

ChorusOfDisapproval · 04/04/2025 22:24

We're camping tonight! In my PJs and under a big cosy duvet and blanket as we speak. I may wake up in the small hours and be frozen though! It's so clear tonight and there's a chance of seeing the Northern Lights, so well worth it IMO.

ProudCoralBear · 05/04/2025 07:06

@ChorusOfDisapproval how did it go?

I’m reading this thread as a. Sort of cosy reminder that I’ll never camp again! 🤣

wrapping up in 1,000 layers to sleep and pissing in a bucket in the night is not my idea of fun!

ProudCoralBear · 05/04/2025 07:13

@Springflowersyay it’s funny isn’t it it’s having the exact opposite effect on me 😂 planning to go out today and get some extra bits and book something for Easter weekend

Genius idea!

We don't have kids, but went down to Cornwall last Easter as it was my birthday.

Never again! We were in a campervan and are seasoned campers, but it POURED with rain for 4 days straight and was bitterly cold.

It put us off so much, we've not camped since!

SpringHasSprungGrassIsRizIWonder · 11/04/2025 11:39

Just bumping this thread to see how you early campers are getting on!

I'm itching to go, but I want to go a simpler camping style, after years of monster tents and folding camper. The set up and pitch striking times started to get ridiculous and stopped us enjoying camping.

So I'm stripping back to the basics, so I can chuck it all in and go for just a night or two.

I've camped throughout the winter previously, but with an EHU, heater, tent with carpet.

I'm not sure I can risk camping too early in a small non electric set up!

ChorusOfDisapproval · 11/04/2025 14:27

@ProudCoralBear it was lovely. I'd had a few wines when I posted, so forgot to mention we were in a campervan rather than a tent! Didn't see the Aurora unfortunately.
