Don't forget to top up water for the birds, hedgehogs and some mud for bees

In the southern UK it has hardly rained for three weeks (my laundry isn't sad about this) but the birds, hedgehogs and bees would appreciate some water.

Don't forget to top up your bird baths, have a large dish on the ground for hedgehogs and pour some water in a corner of a flower bed to stir up a gloopy muddy wet mix for the bees, they need it for their nests.

I looked out my window this afternoon and saw a sparrow land on the dry bird bath. Any excuse to step away from the laptop for a minute I went and topped it up and by the time I walked back down the garden path the sparrow was back again having a drink.

The hedgehog didn’t appear last night so the bowl of water was untouched and a magpie took a quick drink as I looking at the garden. I love the feeling of doing a bit to help out.

Morning reminder that your local town centre, suburban and rural wildlife might like a drink or a bath today.

We have an ice cream tub sunk into the lawn for passing frogs in the summer. I'm hoping a dopey one doesn't pop by and spawn into it as we have no space for tadpoles.

I was disappointed last week when I filled up my ceramic bird bath and everything leaked out. Found it had a hairline crack so I ordered a resin repair kit and mended it. Doesn't look pretty, but it's functional again and the birds are happy. I've got a smaller shallow dish filled with stones and a little water that the bees and smaller bugs appreciate. I love seeing the birds and insects there.

We use a big round plastic plant pot saucer on top of our smaller birdbath. Several sparrows and a couple of bigger birds can get into it. We call it the Lido!

Yes I’ve been doing this daily and the birds love it. Get a few of the local cats visiting too. I use an old paint roller tray and often leave my phone out on time lapse to get some close up pics. Here’s a beautifully coloured starling(?) I think just after its bath, I never realised they had all those colours…

I'm also going to get sunflowers planted today. The birds peck the heads all winter.
