It's just me and dd, and our cat. She's autistic so isn't speaking yet but has come on so much since turning 5 🥺

She's so much more aware now, and is understanding more. And she's using the toilet!

No reason for this post. It'll be a quiet birthday. I plan to send her into school tomorrow with a cake, and they'll have a little party for her.

I wish I could do more for her. This next year of her life is about making her friends, as she currently doesn't have any, which i feel like crap about. It's hard as she doesn't see the same sen kids outside of school, or the same neurotypical ones tbh

But that's what this year is for - getting her semi verbal and making friends.

This time 5 years ago, I had just discovered that I was all alone with an almost one year old, facing a pandemic. I didn't think we'd make it, but here we are ❤️

If anyone is alone with their baby, no family and friends, just keep on going. It does get better.

And if anyone has any experience with private speech therapy, please do share xx

Dunno where I'd be without mumsnet ☀️🙌

Thank you everyone 💕

So many things have been hard but she's been the best thing ever 🥺 - dunno where I'd be without her 😄

Shes still awake, terrible sleeper, with no idea why i keep on staring at her and hugging her! 🤭

I’ve got a pretty good idea why!

Give her one from us too OP - and thank you for the heart-warming post.

Good luck with your goals for this year and keep us updated! 🎈🎂🎁

POTC · 03/04/2025 23:10

Please don't worry about the friends thing, making it the focus of the year for you both just adds unnecessary pressure. It will come when she's ready, she isn't bothered about it like you are I promise! My Neurospicy one turns 18 next week, he's still non verbal if he gets overwhelmed but is off to uni in September! He didn't make friends until high school, but they were the right ones and he's happy.

IntermittentFarting · 03/04/2025 23:12

From the mother of another autistic daughter (mine’s 18 now!) a very happy birthday to yours!
I hope she - and you and the pussycat - have a lovely day! 🎂🎈🎊

TheCurious0range · 03/04/2025 23:19

Don't worry about the friends thing it will come, my ds is the same age, his school have a couple of classes for children with SEN and they have an associated mainstream class so when there are lessons they can engage with they join the other class with their TA. DS this year has made firm friends with one of the little boys in that situation, he absolutely adores him, he has limited speech but DS reads comics to him and they both fall about laughing at bunny Vs monkey and now he joins in when DS and other friends play tag in the playground. We had him for a playdate a few weeks ago with his mum (who is also lovely) , they didn't play together much and ds was aware not to push that, they did build a very impressive train set between them though and had a run about in the garden. His mum told me she'd been so worried about him not making friends but it's happening.

Omg happy birthday to your little one! Same for me, i was in hospital for days before I had her, wasn't easy 🥺

But we've made it this far! You've raised them for 7 years and survived the tough times. May we only experience joy from now on!

Solidarity girl, it definitely isn't! But I wouldn't change this journey I've been given, for i wouldn't be her mum

God I'm feeling so mushy 😄 x

Thank you @IntermittentFarting and @POTC - so glad your ds has made the right friends and is happy

She seems so interested in other kids now 🥺

But agree, it's me imagining how I'd feel rather than how she's actually feeling - just want her to be happy xx

@TheCurious0range your ds sounds lovely! So glad his friend has someone like your ds who understands him, and who he can just be around

Fingers crossed for the same for my dd, but agree, i can't rush things x

It's always been just me too, I do think that makes it different as you've got no one to say these things to!
Trust me though, you will have so many wonderful, and often hilarious moments. Yesterday, as we were rushing to get out the door to 6th form, the boiler service man turned up. We didn't know he was coming. DS told him I was busy so he asked if he could speak to his dad instead. DS replied with 'You can try, hes on the other side of the world though and has been for 15 years so if you manage it please let us know' 😂 Absolutely no filter 🙈

Yes, sometimes you just need someone to bounce ideas off of, and vent to!

😄🙌 yes ds! Sometimes those no filtered moments are perfect 🤭

Thank you ❤️

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 04/04/2025 22:42

Thank you ❤️

We did, I sent her into school even though she was a bit poorly, as i didn't want her to miss her little celebration there 🥺

Not sure i did the right thing but she seems okay, although off her food

I took the opportunity to have a nap when she was at school 🤭, no more for me for at least the next two weeks

In bed now together, waiting for her to drop off. Lots of cuddles and kisses. A lovely end to the day 🥰
