CV advice

Forgive the very basic question, but do people write a chronological CV these days or is it best to do a skills based one? I am a lawyer and have been at the same firm since qualification 10 years ago so have not had to do a CV for a long time now. I could ask a legal recruiter but I don’t want to waste their time (an opportunity has come about through a chat with a contact so I would be applying directly). Any tips most appreciated! Thank you.

Chronological but list skills and achievements within the chronology

"People" do different things.

Usually the advice is to do chronological unless you're looking to move role / industry (in which case, skills-based is best), but list skills at the top.

But you can do whichever you think makes you sound strongest.

As per the above, bullet-point key skills at the top (tweaking them to best fit with whatever you apply for) and then reverse chronology below that (and ditto).

It depends.

Are you looking to step up, sideways, or try another industry, or field? If so a skills based CV is useful. I have a patchwork CV filled with self employment and have worked in several industries so mine is skills based too.

Chronological CV is really better for sticking with the same industry just moving on to another similar role in a similar company.

Do both types of CV, skills and chronological, because seeing what transferrable skills you have can improve a chronological CV too. It might also make you think of a interesting new job role you might never have thought about applying for too.

Thank you all, much appreciated. I’ll give the key skills followed by a chronology (with listed skills) a go and see how it looks on the page. I am looking to move sideways @MarkingBad(very similar role but better money and more opportunity for progression).

It never hurts to put your key skills in to tailor your CV to the job on either CV types, it can catch the attention if a human is reading and AI if the skills are mentioned as key phrases.

Good luck!
