Are you ruthless with throwing things away or a hoarder?

Hoarder here, but after watching sort your life out, I am hoping to become a ruthless declutterer. My house is needs a big sort out. What is everyone else like?

Do you mercilessly throw things away that you no longer need or hold onto them?

It depends. I still have my uni books and I tend to keep things like postcards/tickets from things we’ve attended in a box, and I keep all of my birthday and Christmas cards. I like to think it’s “sentimental” rather than “hoarding” though 😉

Hoarder raised by boomer born in rationing years

All of the greetings cards? Maybe just pick out the special ones

Recovering keeper of stuff here. I like having the right thing for the right occasion. I am pretty good at getting shot of things I no longer value. I got past the sunk cost fallacy and now value space. What this actually means is I can just about fit the stuff I do want in the cupboards.

Used to keep all sorts of shite but am much better at having regular clear outs now. There’s still more I could do but I need to take some time off and just crack on with it.

I’m in the middle.
My parents were hoarders and I find having a lot of stuff overwhelming.
Yet…
I get a lot of pleasure from drinking from the ‘right’ glass so I have a lot of glassware. I love being able to accommodate the extended family at Christmas and having enough of everything (towels, bedding, plates, cutlery etc)
I have lots of clothes, especially jumpers. I’m very temperature sensitive so have all different thicknesses and styles to accommodate different weathers. My friend has three hoodies and a cardigan!
I’ve always got lots of loo roll, tissues, washing powder, tinned and dried foods etc in stock.
I like our home to reflect who we are and have things collected from our lives not everything chosen to create a look. It’s not very cohesive though so looks messier as a result.

I’m quite ruthless in other areas though. We have a few ornaments on display but not loads of nicknacks everywhere. We don’t have piles of paperwork sitting around. I’m not sentimental about stuff. If something breaks or wears out it goes. I’m quite good at getting rid of stuff we don’t use. Everything in my kitchen is used, I cook from scratch almost every day but I don’t have loads of duplicates of utensils etc.

The biggest problem areas are toys, games, beach stuff etc but I know this stage doesn’t last long so don’t worry too much about it, just keep filtering through to get rid of stuff they’ve outgrown.
