Memory Foam or Sprung Mattress

I need a new mattress. I can Google things until the cows come home. But what are people’s real life experiences of memory foam v sprung?

If there is any chance you may be experiencing menopausal hot flushes at night, I have heard that memory foam might not be the best choice - they are on the warm side according to a bed sales rep the last time we bought a new mattress.

Ideally I'd go for a spring mattress with at least 4000 springs. Wool filling if possible.

I currently have an Otty Hybrid which is spring and memory foam. Memory foam can get hot but mine has a cooling layer. It's quite firm and retains it's shape.

It's fine for the time being but when it goes I'll get a wool pocket sprung one.

Memory foam is okay if you naturally run cool, but in summer, or when ill, or menopausal, then you are a hot sweaty mess.

Sprung. Memory foam, you might as well be sleeping on an electric hot plate.

Sprung 👀

I have a sprung mattress with a memory foam top thing. Means I can't turn it over but do swap it end to end iyswim.

I love it, it's quite soft, but my DS and my DPs who sleep in it when they come to stay absolutely hate it. They say it's way too soft. I sleep in the spare room which has a sprung mattress when they stay and I hate it because it's too firm!

Maybe go to a bed shop and use that machine which tells you the best sort of mattress? That's what I did when I got mine. They get you to lie on it in the position you would normally sleep and recommend the best fit. Then you go and lie on actual beds with that particular mattress.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/04/2025 15:04

The best sprung you can afford. I wouldn’t touch memory foam for many reasons,my health and the nasty chemicals coming off them for starters.

Nevergotdivorced · 02/04/2025 15:06

Memory foam is so hot😱.

StarlightLady · 02/04/2025 15:10

Thank you everybody! And l wondered f l would get any replies for something somewhat mundane but important.

lt sounds as if memory phone is not so memorable, so l will look at sprung options. x

I also have an Otty Hybrid and it’s not at all hot to sleep on (it’s the one with charcoal and bamboo, I think). What I love about it is that I no longer get back aches which I did from my ancient sprung mattress. What I don’t like about it is that the edge is soft so sitting on the edge of my bed isn’t great.

i think next time I’ll try to get a really good sprung mattress if I can afford it.

I agree. I'm happy with mine and it's not too hot at all. It's quite firm and retains its shape and I also get a good night's sleep.

Like I said, I will probably upgrade to a pocket sprung wool mattress next.

Hi, glad to see this thread! Posted my own on a new firm mattress as returning my Emma one

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/04/2025 16:04

The new memory foam mattresses have something that makes them cooler.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 02/04/2025 16:04

Don’t buy memory foam if you have a tendancy to overheat!
I found I sank into the foam( which is the purpose of it I know) and couldn’t easily turn over
i have a Sealy posturepedic luxe which is amazing and not expensive for the quality

Ihavepandassurvivalinstinct · 02/04/2025 16:06

Hybrid with pocket springs are top. We actually surprisingly loved Emma one.

HundredPercentUnsure · 02/04/2025 16:07

Sprung mattress every time.

You can always add a memory foam topper if you want, but you can't add springs.

Also - MF gets hit and absorbs sweat. So uncomfy to sleep in in the summer!

Moier · 02/04/2025 16:08

Go to Jysk and try them out.
I'm severely disabled and got a gold memory foam cool gel one.
Was half price in sale.
They have a sale on right now.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 02/04/2025 17:25

I've got an emma mattress - wouldn't buy one again
Edit, and I'm looking at spring ones
