Clothes shops for fussy kids

My DD is 9 years old and we are struggling to shop for her at the minute, she’s really sensitive to how clothes feel on her, won’t wear jeans, cargos, anything restricting or tight, won’t wear crop tops or any tops/dresses with spaghetti straps or ‘itchy bits’. We literally have a few pair of wide leg jogging bottoms that she likes, t-shirts are obviously fine but anytime I buy flared leggings or anything like that she finds it restricting on the waist and if I size up they are way too long for her.

does anyone have any recommendations of shops that does ‘nice’ clothes but are also comfortable. I feel like I’ve exhausted the usual H&M, new look, M&S, Next. I’m fed up buying and returning things constantly so I’m planning on taking her shopping but trying to avoid the changing room meltdowns as she just gets so upset and frustrated when she’s constantly trying things on and doesn’t like how they feel.

Can't she just wear joggers if that's what she likes? What do you mean by 'nice'?

My 9 year old daughter lives in joggers and t shirts because she also doesn't like anything tight or restrictive. She rarely needs to be smart (we don't have school uniform thankfully) but for the odd party she's happy to wear a dress that is like a t-shirt on the top half.

She likes the joggers from Lindex because they have an adjustable waistband so she can get it just how she wants. They are soft and cosy, good thickness, usually good range of colours, very comfy says my daughter.

If she likes the feel of joggers, I'd stick with them and work around it. Some 'smarter' pairs:
Mini Boden Kids' Wide Leg Applique Jogger Trousers, Blue Cherries
John Lewis ANYDAY Kids' Stripe Crinkle Trousers, Pink (cooler for the summer)
Wide Leg Applique Jogger-Chalk Pink Hearts | Boden UK
All would look nice with a plain coloured tshirt. Would she try dungarees with a tshirt underneath?

Top tip, boys clothes have no stupid scratchy lacy bits on them, have t-shirts that are the right size and tend to be looser.

A few places do adaptive clothing which is seamless and causes fewer irritations.

I’m with her, I hate clothes!

I have absolutely no issue with her wearing joggers at all, I can’t seem to find ones she likes that are similar to the style she currently has though, without having to go up a size which are then miles too long, if she was happy to wear ones that cuffed at the bottom it wouldn’t be a problem but she doesn’t like the feel of the cuffs on her ankles. By nice I mean things she could dress up slightly for school discos, parties, nice meals out with the in-laws (who turn their nose up at the joggers look)

DD very much wants some of what she calls nice clothes, she wants to dress similar to her friends but just hates that feeling of certain things. Even if tops have a pattern on the front that has stitching or cut out pieces then it annoys her.

I will check out Lindex and see what they have, thanks

I think she would quite like some of those, the John Lewis ones especially, thank you.

dungarees with a t-shirt underneath could work as long as it’s not a stiff denim so I will look at those

Thanks I’ve definitely bought boys t-shirts in the past as girls can often have sewn on type prints which annoy her, everything seems tighter with cut out details etc for girls.

I’m hoping now it’s getting nicer then she can do some nice loose fitting shorts etc as then I don’t need to worry about length of things the same

Zara. I get Ds lots of trousers from there as they do baggy type soft leggings, cotton soft elastic trousers etc.
He wont wear jeans or cords, or joggers ( finds them too hot)

Zara is one I’ve wondered about as the loose trousers look great online, how do you find the sizing? I’m always put off because adult sizing is horrendous

We rate Uniqlo for very simple, loose fitting and soft kids clothes.

Caspianberg · 02/04/2025 08:48

@Twillseeker - the sizing is good for my 5 year old. I buy him 116cm ( age 6 I think), he’s pretty tall for his age.

( I also hate Zara for adult clothes. But for kids it’s great)

Twillseeker · 02/04/2025 09:01

@Caspianberg amazing thanks I will place an order and see how we get on there. There’s some lovely comfy casual looking bits online.

I’ve never heard of Uniqlo either, but that sounds ideal for her

she wears uniform all week so it’s literally just a few nicer bits for parties and some comfy casual for weekends and school holidays
