Anyone here who does scrapbooking as a hobby?

Dd1's 18th birthday gift was a year of gigs (12 gigs, or one a month, whichever came first). & I bought a scrap book to document it in.

I've got stickers, stencils, fancy pens, printed photos/tickets/confirmations of purchase. I'm just struggling to get started - how do you decide how to lay out your pages?

Bump 🙂 (maybe Tuesday lunchtime isn't the best time to have asked!).

Don’t do it as a hobby, but sometimes end up having to do scrapbook type things for work, I’d look on Pinterest if you want inspiration, otherwise just go for it and don’t overthink, worst case situation you mess up some how, you can rip the page out and cut around the items to restick them back in.

Search scrapbook layouts on Pinterest. There'll be loads.

I can’t really help with your question but just wanted to say what an amazing gift!

lucysmam · 01/04/2025 14:28

@Iknowaboutpopular I did have a scroll earlier on, I'll go back and look again. Nothing really jumped out at me 🤷‍♀️

@Yopl good advice, I think the trouble is overthinking! Maybe I'll lay the pages out first, then I can move things about.

@Isanyonereallyanonymous it's good, isn't it! It was her idea at some point last year...she forgot about it, I didn't 😊. & she's as happy at a tiny indie venue as a massive gig so not overly expensive either!

Oh, I used to regularly use Pinterest when I was scrapbooking years ago.
If thats no good, try typing "scrapbook layout share" into YouTube and there'll be channels with advice. It's a bit of a worm hole kind of hobby, once you start 😂

Start with it chronologically and layout a page at a time.

emailed confirmations of purchase are not likely to be very attractive so I wouldn't be afraid to cut them down to the key part or even tear them so you have a more interesting visual feature like a ripped edge.

If the fear of fixing it incorrectly is too much, get a display book so you can move them around later . lots available but this sort of thing

Look on Facebook for Scrapbooking, there are loads of designers promoting their own designs (and products), and loads of groups to join, some of which are public.
On Facebook, look for Shimelle, Scrapbooking Quebec, Hey Little Magpie, Allison Davis, as well as companies such as 49 and Market, Simple Stories. There's also websites such as Papermaze.

AnneButNotHathaway · 02/04/2025 05:26

I created digital scrapbooks and the content (photos and videos) appeared in chronological order, basically I just followed this guide https://smartshow-software.com/how-to-make-digital-scrapbook.php
I've never made an actual scrapbook but I imagine it could be more or less the same, you either add the photos and notes in chronological order or by themes depending on what your scrapbook is devoted to/about. I agree about checking out Pinterest, there should be tons of ideas and examples of layouts!

Jayinthetub · 02/04/2025 08:40

I do!! @ICouldHaveCheckedFirst‘s suggestions are good to get started (Shimelle is particularly amazing) and it’s definitely a rabbit hole kind of hobby! There are also magazines and books for sale on Vinted if you prefer looking through stuff for ideas. Enjoy 😊

lucysmam · 02/04/2025 09:43

Thank you all so much! @ICouldHaveCheckedFirst I've got nothing planned for the morning so will check out your suggestions for a while.

@AnneButNotHathaway that makes sense, thank you.

I'll have a go at the first one later on without sticking, and send photos to dd, to see what she thinks 😊

Ok - help me make this more appealing! I can't decide whether to cut the middle photo into a more interesting shape...& we can't recall what the cocktails are (they're all themed).

Oh and the random butterfly isn't random - the artists "thing" is butterflies 🦋

I have always used a background rather than stuck straight into the page, and then maybe back each photo or item on another colour or design, then you get some layers which gives a more interesting page .

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 02/04/2025 15:57

@lucysmam

I have a personal aversion to cutting photos into shapes (I'm old and have too many irreplaceable photos), but many do (in fact, there's a "European" style of scrapbooking which uses photos cut into shapes as a main feature, unlike the "American" style which is what we tend to follow in the UK). So, you do what works for you - scrapbooking is all about what you want to do.

Anyway... it's common to "mat" a photo onto a background, to make it stand out on the page. White or black mats are common (just cut down some A4card). You can use glues or double sided tape, or even repositionable adhesive on a roller (I find this especially useful because I am indecisive!) The whole page is usually constructed on a piece of cardstock, traditionally 12inches x 12 inches, but A4 is also popular (and folders to keep A4 pages in are much cheaper nowadays than the 12x12 albums).

Scrapbook pages usually also have a title, and some journalling, which might just be a few lines - who, what, where, when kind of thing - or might be a longer story, whatever you want it to be. Some people like to keep the journalling hidden, eg behind the photo, to keep it private, in which case you might write it on a separate piece of card or paper and pop it behind the photo (or , more likely, the photo mat), with a ribbon attached to pull it out with.

There are of course endless products available, including tags to do just that!

I forgot to mention that Hobbycraft and (to some extent) The Range carry scrapbooking products.

Have fun!

{waves to @Jayinthetub ! It's nice to find a fellow scrapper on here. Bet we could chat for hours!}

Thank you both, I'm in town tomorrow with dd2 for school trousers so we'll nip in The Works for some card to mount the photos on and I'll have another bash at it on Friday if I get time.
