Why not! (unless there’s a big drip feed).

You can always go home if you’re not enjoying it.

Sounds fantastic. All of Europe ready to be seen. I'm planning how I would do it and I'm not going.

LSGXX · 31/03/2025 20:28

Do it!
Go and have a fab adventure with your kid. Eleven is a fantastic age - old enough to be sensible and interested/ curious and to have some stamina and resilience. But pre-Kevinisation!

When my two were 11 and 13, we did a two week tour by train through some of Scandinavia. They remember it fondly, we saw lots, and going by train meant they saw a lot of the countries, the people, and how they live their lives. They were able to carry some luggage (we packed very light) they were able to input ideas and were really good company throughout.
Go for it!

Me and my partner did it two years ago and loved it! Looking to do it again.

Sit down together and pick which countries you both fancy.

Enjoy!

It would most likely just be me and my ds, as dh probably won't be able to get more time off as we all going on a ho,iday start of the school holidays

I have taken him on holiday alone, but it was all very safe, booked into one hotel, flew to Spain, kept the passports in the hotel, safe
And also left my phone in hotel safe so only thing we took out each day was spends for food n drink

Having done a few multi base holidays where I'm travelling within a country/countries, I will always use a passport belt worn under my clothes, and a crossbody bag with minimal possessions in. Make sure you have insurance, and I will book accommodation through a trusted site before I go. (Youth hostels are generally good in Europe and you can book private rooms rather than the dorms I crashed as a youngster; hostelworld.com is a good site)
I'll Google train stations/airports and maps etc prior so I have a vague idea of what to expect at a new place, if you know what the front door of your hotel looks like, it really helps when you're tired and trying to find it
Have a look at Instagram/pinterest etc for hints on travelling solo with a child, there's lots of people doing it
Treat it as an adventure and you and your son will have a great time together. You can do it!

Where do you want to go? What exactly are you worried about? If you are happy on a train in UK with your DS, for my experience the ones in Europe aren’t really much different.

Have you done a lot of city breaks before?
Why did you feel you had to leave your phone in the safe?

herbygarden · 31/03/2025 22:43

Sounds AMAZING! Me and now DH did this one uni Summer. Happy days. Ferry from Italy to Corfu was the highlight!

If left it in the hotel because when we were in the sea swimming etc, I was scared of losing it and it had all my info on it like flight passes etc

I almost did this last year but I just wasn't brave enough on my own.

That's why we ended up in Spain

I've been very lucky to have been many places in the world and alot of cities, but not alone with an 11 year old
Last year, in Spain every time I needed the toilet etc he had to come with me, as I wouldn't let him say wait on the beach etc

But we did have such a nice time, proper one to one-time
