I unexpectedly have my sons company for two hours this afternoon, what shall we do?

My 21yo son didn’t think he’d be able to get away this weekend to come home but has just rung to say he can be here at 3pm and what would I like to do! It’s a lovely surprise as he works away and I really wasn’t expecting to see him for another two weeks.

We’re quite rural, it’s obviously too late to book anywhere for food and he only has till 5pm before he has to leave to make it back to work for a 7pm shift.

Cant go walking as I’m not very mobile at the moment, could go for coffee and cake I suppose but any suggestions? he has a car.

What would you do?

Just chat 😁

is there anywhere you could buy (or could you bake?) some nice cake and brew some tea and coffee for a catch up at home?

doodahdayy · 30/03/2025 12:21

Can’t he pick up something on the way like cake? It’s Mother’s Day after all.

Ted27 · 30/03/2025 12:23

@bookstack

Are you me? My son is 21 and I won't be seeing him for 2 weeks,
I also have a stack of unread books.

I think I'd ask him to drive me to B&Q.

Seriously though, I'd either ask him to bring some cake so you can just catch up at home or if you really want to get out go to a pub or a tea shop with a garden so you can enjoy the sunshine.

What a lovely surprise !

I might be you!
A trip to B&Q is a great idea 😆

I can’t imagine he’ll come empty handed, but it would be nice to get out of the house, even if just for a drive and chat.

Bump the suprise back at him, go to m&s and throw him s few treats in to take home and shove in his cupboards, because it's ace when mums always are looking out for you (and maybe my dc did similar once and ehen she left she gave me a huge hug with "tjanks mum" leaving cockles of my heart glowing 😁)

Sunshineandrainbow · 30/03/2025 12:33

Any garden centres near you with a cafe?

That’s a lovely idea. I do actually have a bag in the pantry that I’ve been building up for his visit in a couple of weeks, he can have it early 😊

Pick up some sandwiches, can of coke for him, bottle of bubbly for you, drive to a bench in a pretty spot, eat tea and chat.

What a nice surprise, Enjoy!

StScholastica · 30/03/2025 12:35

Drive to local park and have something to eat in a cafe or even on a park bench if need be.

Can you get to a lake or riverside to feed the ducks?

Or a nice pub for drinks?

Any National Trust properties nearby? Or privately owned open gardens?

Garden centre?

StScholastica · 30/03/2025 12:38

Also, moving forwards, have you thought about getting a blue badge for parking.

TeaIsNice · 30/03/2025 12:42

take out and relax

Gundogday · 30/03/2025 12:43

Enjoy!

My dad apparently doesn't meet the criteria despite being 90, having cancer and walking with sticks.

It’s only temporary (I hope) so not needed.

I used to take my mum for a drive and to get her favourite drive-through coffee!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 30/03/2025 14:34

Can you drive to the seaside or a lake? Local beauty spot?

I’m 42 and my 80 year old mum still does this for me when I visit. I love it- could get anything from a blouse to a pack of biscuits or a doormat. It’s nice that you do it for your son.

My suggestion is a garden centre. Weather is lovely where I am and I went to our local one earlier, it was gorgeous. Must put some plants into pots now.

Also, if your son is taller and strong that you, rope him into doing some jobs you’ve been putting off!

bookstack · 30/03/2025 17:27

Thank you for all the suggestions. He brought me some beautiful tulips and a bottle of orange gin. We went to the park and had takeaway G&t’s (his was just tonic and orange slices) and we had a lovely catch up. Sweet boy, love him.
