Men wearing makeup?

I was browsing tiktok when I came across someone that I follow applying some make up. I don't know him personally. I never knew some men wearing some make up. It was only very little. Some little coverage and some contouring. Since then, there was another man that came up on my tiktok also applying some make up but he is a make up artist.

When I see my hairdresser, his skin is fabulous in his 40s and I would say he has at least a very good skincare regime. He looks fantastic.

I am not judging them by the way and I certainly don't think it's weird and I have no bad wishes against men wearing makeup. I just never saw it before and I associated makeup with women. And i think it's great too. To see some men interested in their skincare and looking great too.

So question:
Do you know men interested in skincare and makeup?

I grew up with a few brothers and a skincare regime would be non existance. The only thing they know about is a shaving oil and balm or whatever and that's about it. There's no facial skin care as such.

I think it's lovely. Men wearing some make up that is.

I know quite a few men who wear make-up, but they are all in the performing arts one way or another and wear it in the course of their work, so not really what you are asking I suppose. I don't think they wear it when they're in civvies.

I know so many who do. Mostly alternative folks. And/or queer. Been the norm for me to see, for about 25 years. I love it. Clothes and make up are for everyone.

45 years ago at university the boy next to me in the chemistry lab wore mascara, it’s not a new thing, unusual still, but not new. We were engineering students, nobody batted an eyelid.

My whole crowd growing up were musical artsy types, it was very common for the boys and men in our group to wear eyeliner/mascara etc, though less common that they’d have worn foundation etc.
I never batted an eyelid at it and still have a weakness for a good looking man with a well smudged eye 🤣

You obviously weren't around in the '80s. Lots of male pop stars wearing make up.

I always suspected that Grayson Perry wore a little makeup - but I may be wrong.

This is what I would have said, but you beat me to it!

My 16yo son has started to dabble with eyeliner. He looks a bit like he’s had a rough night but I just let him get on with it. He has a bit of a goth vibe going on in general though!

I’m an academic. It’s still a minority of male students, but not so wildly unusual. But I was a teenager in the eighties, and lots of my male friends were being Robert Smith.

Day to day, I can think of a few male colleagues who wear a bit of subtle makeup- I think it's become more common since most meetings in corporate workplaces became remote, there's nothing like seeing your own face on zoom all day to make you want to put a bit more makeup on!

Male popstars were wearing make up in the 70's. David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Roy Wood, Dave Hill to name but a few.

Some men do their make-up better than the women.
I dont have anything against it tbh.
both my sons do skin care every day must take care of their skin they wear make-up on a night out not slapped on but its done really well.

Nikkynakkynoo · 30/03/2025 11:41

I think what OP is getting at is men wearing "natural" make up - subtle skin perfecting, hiding blemishes etc. Which is v different to the new romantic / goth scenes people are referring to. And I agree, I think it is becoming more common place.
