Bus Stop outside my bedroom

A bus stop has suddenly appeared outside of my bedroom window. I assume it is for a new service that will be running through my neighbourhood. I think the bus will be running every half an hour. It will start operating in the next couple of weeks.

Its great to have the new bus service, but….

The bedroom faces the street. The bus stop is immediately outside of the window. The pavement is not particularly wide, so the buses will be very close.

Does anyone else have a bus stop next to their bedroom? Should I be concerned about noise and pollution? I am concerned.

Noise...
We have a bus stop 10metres away. Buses let out a loud "sigh" as they stop (I'm guessing its some sort of pneumatic system).then the engine noise as it pulls off.

We don't have electric buses yet, they maybe quieter!

They aren't as loud as the tractors though.

I don’t live near a bus stop, however I imagine it’s going to be much noisier, the sound of the engine running while passengers board, leave.
People waiting for the bus, they will be standing by your window, so generally more noise. Unless there is a bin, there will be more rubbish as people will drop cigarettes and whatever they are drinking and eating.

Also you might not be able to park outside your house if you do so currently. Depends on road markings.

BitterTits · 30/03/2025 10:02

Will there be double deckers?

Ddakji · 30/03/2025 10:06

Are the buses electric where you are? That’ll make a difference.

I think my concern would not be the buses themselves but having a queue of people outside my house all the time.

Still - very handy for you!

justforthisnow · 30/03/2025 10:07

If its double deckers will they be able to see into your bedroom?

OnGoldenPond · 30/03/2025 10:24

Didn’t you get notification that this was planned by the council? You should have been given the opportunity to object to this. I would do that now.

I have a bus stop at the front of my house and it’s a 24 hour route. Luckily it’s not right next to my window and it doesn’t disturb too much. The buses aren’t that noisy.

I would suggest silicone earplugs. They are great at blocking out everything.

OnGoldenPond · 30/03/2025 10:26

To add, it is very handy for getting to work, I use the bus tracker app when going to work and can sit comfortably in my kitchen until the bus is 2 minutes away! Smile

Beekeepingmum · 30/03/2025 10:27

I'd be more concerned about the people waiting for the bus. It is a prime spot for people to stand and smoke before getting on the bus.

CheesyRaver · 30/03/2025 10:27

I had one at uni, double deckers every 10 minutes. I didn't notice the noise particularly- it was a city suburb high street but did have old fashioned nets and didn't dress or undress infront of it with the light on Blush

PutitDownandReadaBook · 30/03/2025 10:28

It’s probably going to be double deckers. I can get some blinds so I’m not too worried about that.

There are some electric buses where I live, but there are still a lot of diesel ones. I really hope that they will be electric buses. I think I could cope with that. I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

is it your own house? did you get no warning or right to appeal?

PutitDownandReadaBook · 30/03/2025 10:37

It’s a block of flats. Social Housing. I think I’m most upset that there has been no communication at all from the bus company or local authority. Not even just a note through the door to explain what’s happening.

I am looking forward to being able to leave my front door and step straight on to the bus!

if your house is anything like our first one, keep your bedroom curtains closed when in there.

we had a small cottage built in the 1800s and a double decker bus stopped outside. Poor passengers on the top deck got more than they bargained for.

I still shiver at the thought now and it was over 20 years ago!! 😫

I’d be a little concerned about the fumes, I recently read a really sad story of a girl who died from complications of her asthma which they linked to the traffic lights outside her bedroom window and with the fumes of cars and lorry constantly pulling off right outside and creating more fumes than average and giving her health complaints. Be wary of opening windows on that side for sure.

ButterCrackers · 30/03/2025 12:12

Report litter to the bus company. Can waiting passengers sit on your window edge or wall? If so see what you can do to prevent this.

If that’s the little girl in Lewisham, all London buses are either hybrid or electric, I believe. She lived on the South Circular Road and I would guess it’s cars, lorries etc rather than buses.
