Thumb not healing - GP or back to minor Injuries

Six weeks ago I had an accident at home, I tripped over the dog and went crashing into the door frame.

my thumb took the brunt and I was convinced I’d broken it, it was excruciatingly painful. I went to A&E, had a x-ray but came back no fracture (the pain was all in my thumb knuckle)

I was given a brace to wear but told not to wear for more than a week

it’s 6 weeks on now and my thumb is so painful. I’ve got a lump on the inside of my knuckle and I still cannot bend it much

I don’t know whether to go to the gp or back up to minor injuries at A&E

i almost feel neither as I feel like a hit or a fraud but it’s still so painful

GP

It is not life or death

loropianalover · 29/03/2025 20:35

I’d imagine GP would just refer you for another X-ray, so I’d just go straight to minor injuries.

MissMoneyFairy · 29/03/2025 20:39

Minor injuries can re xray, it might be a missed fracture or something hitting a nerve,

2dogsandabudgie · 29/03/2025 20:39

I would go back to A and E. Someone I know had an x ray on their hand but was told there were no bones broken. 2 weeks later they went back as hand was still swollen and painful. A different Dr. looked at the x rays again and it turns out they had broken a bone which had somehow not been seen first time round!

Minor injuries. The GP won’t be able to help.

minisoksmakehardwork · 29/03/2025 20:43

GP. Our minors wouldn't see an injury over 2 weeks old.

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/03/2025 20:49

Call 111 they can advise on which service is best, ultimately you’ll need an x-ray and your GP won’t have one so 111 may be able to refer you to a clinic without having the GP in the middle.

i had a tension fracture of the ligament in one of my fingers a few years ago and it sounds like it could be something similar, basically the ligament pulls away from the bone it’s attached to when it’s bent sharply at the wrong angle. I needed a night time splint for several weeks to put the finger back in the right position.

Minor injuries is for injuries less than 6 weeks old, therefore GP but good luck!

Same here.

My GP would refer me for an x-ray - which is at Minor Injuries! But MI would not let me self-refer for an old injury.

ScaryM0nster · 29/03/2025 20:55

GP. They’ll probably refer for an x ray, but may equally decide physio is best route.

I’m going to call at minor injuries on Monday morning and just see what they say. Hopefully as they saw me when the injury happened 6 weeks ago they’ll take another look

it does sound like a tension fracture, I can only bend my thumb about 30% of the way

Hand therapist here - due to the age of the injury it should be your GP you attend. They can order further imaging and refer on for therapy!

sorry, got my terminology wrong, it’s been a few years. ‘Avulsion fracture’ is what I had.
