If blood results are abnormal will a GP always make contact?

I had bloods taken last Monday and the results were due back Thursday. I made a mental note to call for results but due to being really busy with work I completely forgot.

Do I have to call to prompt results or will all blood tests be reviewed and I’ll be contacted if anything is amiss?

Not sure whether to forget about them unless I hear from the doctor.

You’ll have to call for the results.

My gp surgery only gets in touch if they’re abnormal or need redoing. They send out a text.

CheesyRaver · 29/03/2025 17:18

Ours will text to ask you to make an appt. They won't give results over the phone but you can check them on the nhs app

Not always, no. When having a sample taken we get told to call in a week for the results because they do over 400 tests a week. If even half of those had to be called there would be even less appointments! If something is only slightly out and maybe needs repeating in a month or whatever, they wouldn’t necessarily call.
Look on the NHS app or call them to check.

We get call or text if we need to follow up. If you have nhs app results may appear there.

If you have NHS app or the system your GP practice has - mine uses SystmOnline, you can see the results. Plus the ideal ranges for each of the elements they requested to test. Then an outcome.

Generally, someone will make contact if they need follow up. That said, if they’ve been reviewed by the GP, they will be available on the NHS app and you can look at them yourself, then ring if you have any questions.

No, in the experience of a friend, who turned out to have something wrong.
You need to chase.

My surgery texts me and tells me to make an appointment, either routine or urgemy.

When DH had abnormal results he was called the same day and told to get back to the doctors. On another occasion he was called and told to go first to the GP then on to hospital.

Whiskyworking · 29/03/2025 18:16

Thanks. My NHS app is sparsely populated, only my medication and past / upcoming appointments are on there. I’ll call on Monday

In my experience, my GP surgery always arranges a follow up telephone appointment to discuss my results. They are also available on the NHS app. Hospital blood tests won't be discussed with me except at my next scheduled appointment and only then if they are abnormal. They are available on the MYCARE app.

Ilovelowry · 29/03/2025 18:38

I always get a text message from my GP to say either normal or abnormal.

But I've usually looked at them on the app and gooogled them before I get the text.

In general I get my results the next morning, I get them done at the hospital and so they are processed so quickly.
