Schools to cut teachers, GCSE courses AGAIN in funding storm.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss when it comes to school funding...

https://schoolsweek.co.uk/schools-warn-of-staff-cuts-as-reeves-snubs-sector/

Reports that the National Insurance grant will fall short of need by up to 35% in some areas, that some secondary schools are being asked to make £750,000 in savings, that schools are having to dig into their reserves and consider cutting staff and GCSE subjects.

At the same time the govt has recommended a pay rise of 2.8% for teachers while the DfE themselves calculate that schools can only cover a rise of 1.3% (meaning cuts would need to be made to fund it) while experts say teachers need a pay rise of at least 3.7% to keep up with average earnings growth. The NEU are running an indicative ballot on potential teacher strike action while we wait for the recommendation of the independent pay review body.
https://www.tes.com/magazine/news/general/spring-statement-teacher-pay-rise-nfer

And pupil premium funding will only increase by 2.3% next year while school costs are projected to rise by 3.6% threatening reduced provision for disadvantaged children.

All depressingly familiar.

Labour spent years slagging off the Tory's now they are doing the same. I really despair we have governments value our DC education so little. It's a disgrace.

MyDarlingClementine · 29/03/2025 16:29

@noblegiraffe and yet fe is trying to educate the ones with sen and troubles who school left behind.

noblegiraffe · 29/03/2025 20:33

@MyDarlingClementine

Yes, and I hate to say this, maybe that's why FE is such a low priority.

Which is obviously ridiculously shortsighted, but nothing new.

Well yes, I was thinking that the difference was that the Tories made all those cuts to education because they wanted to give tax cuts to the rich.

But then Labour are doing it because they want to avoid giving tax rises to the rich, so it's all the same really.

Both Tory and Labour governments have given no tax cuts. The tax threshold has been frozen for years putting up tax for rich and poor alike.

Local 6th forms here are reducing their subject offer.
The Arts and MFL seem the most affected.
I had hoped that a Labour government would actively try and make state education fit for purpose, but...
evidently not.
How many labour MPs send their kids to state school?
There seems to be no interest in reversing the disastrous cuts and austerity of the Tory years.
It's just more of the same.

Liz Truss tried really hard.

And Rishi promised them in his election manifesto

The Tories were always going on about tax cuts. Did they not actually manage any in their 14 years?

Tax cuts not that I'm aware of. NI cuts yes.

I don’t think so. The pattern was:

  • Say tax cuts are needed to boost the economy
  • benefit from goodwill from the business owners/reinforce your position as the party of business
  • Labour screams and shouts about the evil of tax cuts and says we should increase benefits
  • no tax cuts happen as it’s not politically the right time
  • Tories retain their boost from saying ‘tax cuts’, Labour get a boost from their own based, nothing changes
