How to take a shower if 1 year old isn’t napping

Hi all I’m struggling to take a shower these days, always used to take one during my sons nap but since he turned 14 months he doesn’t want his nap in the morning now, have tried many times putting him in his cot but he just screams until I get him out again, I took a shower yesterday with him in his cot and he screamed the entire time and I felt super guilty 😢 especially se ing he had real tears as well! Any suggestions as to what I could do? There is no one here during the day to sit with him

Glad you found something that works OP! There's nothing worse than feeling like you can't even have a wash, it can be really soul destroying.

My 2nd would sit in the shower tray and splash about but my first would have exploded if I’d tried that (he still doesn’t like getting his hair wet) so that’s quite child dependant.

Mine would usually play happily in their cot for five minutes but sometimes I would sit them on a non-stick mat in the shower with me.

They loved it!

Put him on the floor in the bathroom with a snack and some cartoons to watch, while you shower. He will be happy.

Why does he need cartoons to watch? What’s wrong with books or a puzzle? Jeez. Screens screens screens.

He's 14 months. Probably not doing the cryptic crossword yet.

Some mornings if it’s really difficult I just take him in with me and he plays on the floor of the shower while I have a wash!

We had a shower over the bath so would shower together he played with toys. It's fun. We had a shower tray in the other house. He'd crawl in waiting for the water.

At night. I’ve never showered during the day when mine were babies unless Dh was home or it was after bedtime. I have no need for a shower in the middle of the day. Mine are older now but I only have a daytime shower now after working out or doing farm chores (animal poo!).

I can’t leave my baby to cry, but she’ll chill out for 5mins for a quick shower if I put miss rachel on. She doesn’t get other screen time so it’s a real novelty for her. I know some people would judge but I can’t see how it’s worse for her than just being distressed.

Just have him in the bathroom?
what do people think single parents do? Never shower?
few toys on the floor and you’re set. I wouldn’t leave mine in a different room to cry that’s completely unnecessary.
or even easier shove him in the bathtub with you or in the shower cubicle, two birds one stone.

who mentioned crosswords? You do know what a puzzle is, right?

Galaxybisc · 28/03/2025 22:40

With dc1 I’d put them in the travel cot in my room in front of peppa pig, as otherwise they’d just cry. Dc2 was content sitting in cot playing with toys. Always better to shower before they wake up though.

Used to put mine in the walker , but it had breaks so couldn’t move. I only take 5 minutes. When they were younger they were sat in thier baby chairs. Most of time they’d fall asleep. We were fortunate to have a big bathroom back then. So they were far enough back from the steam nd such but close enough so I could get to the, if there was an issue.

Shower on an evening before bed perhaps?
