Can an adult learn a new handwriting style?

Just as the title says really.

I have never really liked my handwriting but have just learned to accept it.

However, I am applying for a new job as a teacher, ECT, and the school use cursive handwriting. Am I too old at 40 to change my style now? Is this something I can train myself to do?

Any tips? I think I’ll print out some handwriting sheets from a similar scheme but I can’t think of anything else that would help.

Yes. I changed my handwriting completely when I had to write a fictitious WWI diary at university. My hand got used to it after a while and then I just carried on with it. It was much prettier than my old handwriting which was rounded and very 1980s

Yes, you absolutely can. I was taught to lead out of my letters, and always wrote that way, whether I was writing cursive or printing. My handwriting was perfectly decent

In my mid 40s I started volunteering at an infant school where they taught the children to lead into and out of all letters. They also formed several letters differently to me. I made a deliberate effort to form my letters according to the way handwriting was taught in this school. Within a short time I found myself writing the school way even outside the context of school.

So I'm sure you can do it, too, if it is something you have chosen to do, and are personally motivated to do, rather than forced to do against your will.

Amazon has some lovely handwriting books aimed at adults. I ordered this one when I was looking for a mindfulness activity.

Yes you can. I learnt French cursive as an adult.

Brilliant, thank you! I wasn’t sure if I would be fighting a losing battle. The handwriting books look great! Definitely in my shopping basket.
