Defrosted milk

I’ve never defrosted milk before. It will defrost after a few hours in the fridge. But how long after that is it safe to drink.

OP posts:

Defrosted foods should normally be used within 24 hours

I do this all the time. Never consumed it within a certain time frame .

My parents live off defrosted milk. They like to rotate it through and use it to keep the freezer full so it's efficient. No time frame on using it. They only buy 4 pint bottles and it's only the two of them so takes a few days to use.

That's if it is out of the fridge and gets to room temperature. Milk defrosted in a fridge will be fine. If it had several days left on the date label before it was frozen, the clock starts again from there.

OP - remember to give it a bit of a shake once it has defrosted - sometimes there's still an iceberg in the middle.😂

Never defrosted milk in the fridge always on the counter top. Just treat it the same as fresh milk, you will know by the taste and smell if it's gone off.

Yeah, would take forever in the fridge. I'd just leave it out too

It can take a while to defrost in the fridge, so take it out of the freezer in plenty of time. Also it can separate a bit so give it a good shake before using.

It will last for a few days after defrosting, but you will know when it's gone off anyway!

I regularly freeze unopened 4L milk containers. My house is cold and it would take forever to thaw them out on the counter top.

I run the hot tap until it is as hot as possible then put the container in a washing up bowl, cover with hot water and leave to thaw. The water is cold before the milk has a chance to get even lukewarm.

Give the container a good shake when thawed out to break up any lingering ice in the middle and mix the cream back in if it has separated then put it in the fridge. It will keep just as long as it it had never been frozen.

(Is there a proper name for plastic milk containers? Like "milk bottle", "milk carton" - "milk container" just sounds weird.)
