Hi my son has autism and we are going abroad for the first time. Can anyone tell me about the special assistance they offer to children with autism. I had a look and it doesn't say much.

I used Ryanair for special assistance for someone who was disabled & couldn't stand for long petiods. They were brilliant. At Stansted you go to a special area, they give you a sunflower lanyard if you need one. They take you to the front of the check in if you have baggage & take you to the priority security line. Coming home they took us through the rapid passport control/immigration. I couldn't fault the help they gave us.

Special assistance is provided by the airport staff rather than the airline. You can book it through the airline.

there are a number of things that they can offer:

there is a special assistance desk by the check in desks at most airports. If you have special assistance booked then when you check in with Ryanair they will call someone to come and help you.

this person can get you through the security and passport queues quickly (either jump the line or go through a crew entrance).

once through security there is usually an assistance lounge which is quiet (but doesn’t have food etc) where you can wait for someone to take you to the gate.

most special assistance passengers board first and the gate staff will know this.

Special assistance is provided by the airport, not the airline so it’s variable. In my experience, they’re great with physical disabilities but not so good with learning ones. The SA waiting area is better than the main bit though. Bear in mind that if you want special assistance to board/leave the plane, you go on first but leave last.
