Why does Cornwall get such crappy weather ?

Every summer it’s so much worse than say Dorset or anywhere along the south coast
there must be a reason for it

In Devon, they say it is punishment from God for continuing to serve scones incorrect.

But it is so flat! I am always in search of a good view.

One of the other reasons was, I have MS so being flat is another benefit of living in Norfolk.

I have often wondered what kind of weather Ireland gets. I have family in Cornwall and they also comment on the crappy weather and the amount rain, and obviously Cornwall is in the west of these islands, like Ireland itself. Just out of curiosity, has anyone lived in both Ireland and the U.K.? Which would you say gets the most rain/gloomy days?

There's a reason it's known as the emerald isle! 🌧🌳

ahh very interesting thank you, I knew there had to be an explanation
I’d love to find out more why dorset seems to have its own microclimate tho.

when do you think the best time to visit Cornwall is ? May/june ?
or just wait for the weather to be decent then head down !

every single summer, talking school holidays, as far as I can remember, it’s always rubbish
and I always think shouldn’t have gone to Dorset

I have lived in Cornwall for 30 years. We often have beautiful May and June. First day of the school holidays it starts raining. So many years that's happened it's unreal.

Statistically speaking August is often the wettest month of the year.

I suspect it’s because you are coming for a week on holiday and having bad luck with weather? I think it’s lovely, though we specifically live in a rainy microclimate, but last summer was boiling many days. Plenty of sunny dry days. So hot we ran out of water for our animals. It’s always going to be hotter in the south east, but it’s definitely not rainy in Cornwall all summer and into October is still lovely.

I’ve lived in Dublin most of my life, but spent three years in Cornwall. Ireland overall is a few degrees cooler and less sunny than Britain as a whole. The west of Ireland is wetter than the east, in keeping with the pattern across Britain. I used to keep an eye on the weather app when I was living there, and Cornwall was always a degree or two cooler than Dublin. So in terms of ‘good’ weather (ie overall sunshine, temperatures and lack of rain), it seems that eastern GB>eastern Ireland>western GB>western Ireland.

Children go back to school and the weather improves again!

ChompandaGrazia · 26/03/2025 22:26

I live in the East. It almost never rains. As a teacher I tend to remember wet play times and lunches. Since Christmas we have had one day where we had a wet lunch, I don’t think we’ve had a wet break since September. Granted they still go out when it’s drizzle but we’ve not had a proper rained off day for ages.

Very much so! This is the real reason we hate emmets - they make it rain.

I live in Cornwall but (lowers voice, glances over shoulder to check no one can overhear) I think the way they serve scones is silly!

I was recently given a cream tea voucher, but it's for a venue in Devon, luckily!

Depends where you are in Cornwall. I find the West part of Cornwall, St. Ives, Carbis Bay, Zennor et c can be gloriously temperate all year round and in summer although there is mizzle, light rain, it's more sheltered than the Atlantic coast parts such as Bude.

The Penwith peninsula is not far from the Scilly isles so basically a microclimate all It's own. Winters are rarely colder than 11 degrees c.
