Ideas for a 40th birthday present that costs £100

My Mum has asked me to tell her what present I want for my 40th birthday. Her budget is £100 but she said she would go higher for something really special.

I'm not really into 'things' and tend to prefer experiences as presents (e.g. dinner out somewhere special, a spa day, etc). However, my Mum likes presents to be objects, especially for big birthdays, and they can't be anything mundane (e.g. really nice kitchenware); they have to be special.

Unfortunately, the kinds of things she considers special (perfume, jewellery, handbags) are things I have no interest in. Does anyone have any suggestions for things around the £100 mark that meet the requirement of being 'special' but aren't any of the above?

Sorry about your mum. How about a really nice sofa throw and cushions? Bird table or rose bushes for your garden?

Do you read?

ask her to buy you 10 books that she thinks you would love but you might never choose yourself.

love this idea

I’m about to turn 40 and I’m the opposite of you - I love stuff 😁

My mum has bought me some drop pearl earrings (c£125), my dad (they’re divorced) is buying me a Partner in Wine picnic blanket (the pink one - just gorgeous - think they’re about the same price as the earrings) and my Siblings are clubbing together to get me a Yeti cool box. Maybe something like that or the picnic rug (if you like picnics of course) would be good - practical but really nice, high end gifts that can be used to enjoy/enhance an experience.

Very sorry that your mom is poorly and hope you have a lovely birthday.

What about an experience where you make something? Would that meet your mums expectations of being special?

Paint alongs are very popular here - you get the experience plus your artwork as a lasting keepsake.

Or anything similar where you get to make something - clay pot making? Basket weaving? Errrr...sure there are lots more!

Thanks everyone - these are some really lovely suggestions ❤️

That’s a lovely gesture from your mum! It’s tricky when you’re more into experiences and she prefers gifting something tangible for milestone birthdays.
A few ideas that strike a nice balance between “special” and not-too-flashy could be:

  • A beautiful leather-bound journal with your name embossed — perfect if you like writing, planning, or reflecting
  • A framed custom illustration (e.g. of your home, family, or a favourite place) from Etsy — personal and meaningful
  • A luxury candle and pamper set from a brand like Neom or Aromatherapy Associates — indulgent but useful
  • A curated book box subscription (e.g. for fiction or non-fiction lovers)
  • Or, if you’re open to something classic but elegant, Narciso Rodriguez For Her Eau de Parfum is a really timeless, understated scent — nothing too overpowering but still feels special for a birthday. I found it here if that helps:

Hope you find the perfect balance — milestone birthdays deserve something memorable! 🎁

Sorry to hear about your mum, sending love.

I totally get where your Mum is coming, especially knowing she is unwell, she obviously wants to get you something special.

What about a nice patchwork blanket/quilt? I love an engraved hip flask aswell as a personal gift and I love the bench idea too. Hope you think of something and have a lovely birthday xx
