Did she mishear my name?

HuhItsNot · 26/03/2025 11:48

Just on the phone and was asked for my name.
Danielle.
"Could you spell that please?"
"D A N I E L L E"
"Thanks, very unusual that, its nice"

🤔

Its not unusual at all, is it?!

Does it matter?

firkinn · 26/03/2025 11:50

Do you have a particular accent or did she? Or she just might not have known how to spell it so tried to put a compliment in 😂

No, both very local English accents!

I don’t think k I’ve ever known a Danielle, so I’d say uncommon!

But she was probably just making conversation…

Does anything?

Seems it matters to you enough to write a reply, so I guess so!

I thought its a very bog standard 80s name. Certainly never, ever had anyone say its unusual!

Darkclothes · 26/03/2025 11:52

I wouldn't have said it was a rare, obscure name at all! My cousin is Danielle and I went to school with 2 in the 80's.

Togglebullets · 26/03/2025 11:52

She probably misheard you the first time. Felt stupid when you spelt it out as she clicked it was a very straightforward name. Then panicked and said something daft.

That's how my slightly socially awkward brain interprets that anyway!

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/03/2025 11:52

She's probably heard it, but maybe never seen it written so didn't quite click that it's not that uncommon.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 26/03/2025 11:56

😭 I think that she misheard you and then covered it up

She probably has to do it daily though, just part of the job I imagine

HuhItsNot · 26/03/2025 12:06

Maybe!

I know its a non event, i was just a bit baffled that she would think it unusual!

I'm being rung back so if the caller refers to me a Nielle I will know it was a broken line at least 🤣

My 1st name is only 4 letters and pronounced how its spelt. Some people swap letters around for some unknown reason, possibly dyslexia? My surname is not common, so I automatically spell both out. I'm a woman and my name is similar to Mary Franks. Last week, as usual, I clearly spelt out my entire name.
M-A-R-Y etc.
When the delivery arrived it was to: Mr Ramy FrankenFurter. 🙄

JeanGenieJean · 26/03/2025 12:22

@Darkclothes you just made me snort loudly on a train 😂😂

I just startled the dog! 🐕🙂

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 26/03/2025 12:24

Possibly outing myself here but a few years ago I was giving my (maiden) name to someone over the phone and spelt it out, as it was often misspelled. “R O G E R S” I said slowly and clearly. Letter came a week later….

Miss Rajros 😆

HuhItsNot · 26/03/2025 12:25

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Dark that is hilarious!

OP posts:
mewkins · 26/03/2025 12:27

I think she wrote it down and then read it back to herself pronouncing it weirdly eg. Danny- Ellie or something 😆

CryptoFascist · 26/03/2025 12:32

Was she very young sounding? Might not have met a Danielle before, or not realised that Dani is short for Danielle. Lovely name btw.

notprincehamlet · 26/03/2025 12:45

She's probably used to everyone's name having a unique spelling, like Brenda spelt A-A-R-D-V-A-R-K

mindutopia · 26/03/2025 12:54

I think it’s an uncommon name unless you are of a certain age in certain circles. I’m an 80s child and I had a friend named Danielle in school but can’t say I’ve met one in the 30 years since. I would guess she is younger than us and probably doesn’t know a Danielle or misheard you.

HousedInMySoul · 26/03/2025 12:58

I know several Danielles. At least 2 under 30. A couple mid-thirties. So I would say it's an 80s/90s name, and not uncommon at all. Lovely name, imo

BadgersGalore · 26/03/2025 13:04

If you didn't spell it as Delta-Alpha-November etc she may have misheard you and typed it as Bamielle, which would be unusual.

ExtraDecluttering · 26/03/2025 13:08

I think it's fairly unusual, I've only ever met one, but not so unusual I'd comment on it. I agree with @Togglebullets probably misheard and panicked.

Lostworlds · 26/03/2025 13:10

I’ve done this so many times, said a name is not common and lovely, whilst I was busy writing something down and then kicked myself later thinking the person will assume I’m an idiot as the name was very popular 😂

It was probably something she says a lot!

JoyousEagle · 26/03/2025 13:25

Did you spell it just with letters, or like “delta alpha..”? If just letters she might have misheard D and P or B. Panielle or Banielle would be unusual.
