Bang noise in the middle of the night from the attic

The night before last, I was woken up in the middle of the night from a loud bang noise in the attic. It only really lasted a few seconds. It was still loud. It nearly sounded like something falling and maybe falling onto a water tank. Something didn't sounder right.

It was so odd. It was in the middle of the night. It was t the first time I heard it either.

Unfortunately I am afraid of heights and I am unable to go up to the attic and have a look. I don't have anyone in my life to be able to have a look. Maybe in the summer time I might have someone to help.

I stayed awake for a while after that. The house was silent. I didn't hear anything like the pitter patter of feet. So I doubt it's a rat up there. I just don't know.

Has anyone else experienced similar before? Just a loud bang out of nowhere in the middle of the night coming from the attic.

It was so weird. It definitely wasn't the first time it happened. Definitely happened a few times before. But I never took note of it.

Was it windy? Maybe a tile has slipped so wind is blowing around up there and making something move.

I don't think it was windy yesterday or the day before. I mean like there likely would have been some sort of a breeze but it is lovely spring weather. It definitely wasn't windy.

I never took note of the previous times of the weather and wind.

I haven't a clue of a tile fell of the roof.

I could go outside tomorrow when I am home and take pictures of the roof outside and see if I see anything from that.

Are you sure it definitely happened?
Could it have been an auditory hallucination?

I have them, they're really annoying.
They're like really loud but very 'real' noises that jolt me awake.
I'm always 100% convinced they actually happened but they never, ever have.

We heard a strange noise in the middle of the night from the attic - it sounded like a pile of magazines falling off something. A few weeks later we heard feet and scratching and we found a few mice up there.

Other alternative could be something leaning against a wall up there and slipping and falling just because of time and gravity.

Definitely not. I have a pet camera in my room for my hamster and when I work up I took a screenshot of the time. Then yesterday I watched back to the time. The camera and the recording captured the bang but it was different on my phone. There was a loud bang all the same. It definitely happened.

I wouldnt rule out mice or rats to be honest. I don't think it is because I didn't hear any pitter patter of feet and I know rats like sound like elephants. I do have a cat and even having him and his scent around would help against that.

There is a lot of storage and stuff in the attic. That could be a possibilty alright. Something moving or breaking over time like glass could break.

Thanks for clarifying. Definitely a ghost then

Really unhelpful

Why don't you pay a handyperson or pest control person to go up and have a good look round? Something might need mending.

TeaIsNice · 25/03/2025 15:24

Have you found his canoe yet?

SassySusie · 25/03/2025 15:25

I think someone is living in your attic.

CNDflag · 25/03/2025 15:26

Clearly a satanic ritual and demonic presence up there. Burn the house down and run…

Could you put the pet camera up there?

I thought my suggestion was good 🙂

cinnamonbiscuit · 25/03/2025 15:34

I really feel for you as I’ve had this happen in the middle of the night before when I was home alone. I think in our case something fell against the attic door- it was only a baby bath and I would never have thought it could make such a loud noise, but there was literally no other explanation and I had to accept it so that I could feel less scared at night in the weeks following! I hope you manage to figure out what it was.

LollyLand · 25/03/2025 15:35

My new build loft is so noisy at times but it’s been checked by multiple people and pest control as a precaution. My neighbours have the same problem.

It’s the house settling I think and it’s always worse when it’s been warmer during the day and cooling at night.

Well fair enough, I guess even though you’ve heard it before, this time it’s given you a bit of a fright. But honestly, with the best will in the world, the only way you’ll know for definite is if someone goes up there and has a look - we can all have ideas - lighthearted or not, but we can’t know for sure.
Could you ask one of your neighbours maybe? Which raises another point actually…is your house in a terrace or semi detached? Might it have been coming from the next door house?

ilovebagpuss · 25/03/2025 15:40

People can only give you ideas for what it may be, mice, squirrel or just something shifting up there.
Either wait and see or pay a local trade person to pop up there.
I would want to know in case there is something in the water tank.
If you find a plumber you can say you just want a check on the water tank and whilst they are up there you can ask them to cast an eye around.

MummytoE · 25/03/2025 15:52

You need an old priest and a young priest

OnionBudgie · 25/03/2025 16:09

It could possibly be expansion/contraction of the timbers up there. Now that we're gradually starting to get warmer weather, it's a common occurrence due to the warmer days and still cool nights (as a previous poster mentioned). If that's the case, nothing to worry about. Perhaps get a roofer in to take a peek up in the space and tell you if everything looks ok.

BreatheAndFocus · 25/03/2025 16:20

I agree with the tile suggestion above. They can shift in strong wind (which we’ve had over the last couple of months a number of times) and then something minor can move them and they can fall (either to the ground) or through the roofing felt if damaged.

Apart from that, think about what you’ve got stored up there. Could something have toppled over? Also, are there any electrics or pipes up there that could have burst or simply made a noise?

I’d check the tiles from outside and if necessary get someone to take a look in the attic.

orangegato · 25/03/2025 16:20

My house makes banging cracking and popping noises all the time. It’s due to wood, boarded loft and joists and their screws moving according to temperature.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 25/03/2025 16:22

It’s usually an airlock in the pipes freeing itself.

OnlyFrench · 25/03/2025 16:28

Is the house Edwardian or older and a semi or terrace? Sometimes the attics weren’t closed off.

GasPanic · 25/03/2025 16:31

If your loft is full of crap it could be something falling over.

Or a tile coming undo.

An outside bet is it could have been something falling from the sky. Bit of aircraft or space rock.Or tree branch. Maybe worth having a look around the outside of your house for unusual stuff and inspecting the roof.
