This is so hard. 165 guesses and the 877 clue hasn't helped. Any ideas?

the track you’re on isn’t quite the right part of the country I think - the target isn’t a synonym of those words.

If this is a clue it's gone right over my head.

I don't understand how 990 isn't close to a synonym when I can see the connections to the words I have below.

Yes all your words are related but I don’t feel they’re strongly related to the target - you might have a 990 TARGET area I suppose

Take off last two letters of 78 and add a different one. This is a xxxx when you are young. Then 997 is a different xxxx. Its straightforward from there.
