Should eggs be kept in the fridge?

I've been admiring one of those ceramic chickens they sell for storing eggs. But that would mean storing my eggs on the kitchen counter. Do they keep ok out of the fridge?

Yeah they go in the cupboard UNLESS they’ve been washed if they’re washed they go in the fridge

TheChosenTwo · 23/03/2025 17:49

Well they’re not in the fridge at the supermarket are they?!
Yes they’re fine out of the fridge, ours are kept in a box in the cupboard.

TheChosenTwo · 23/03/2025 17:50

Ps if you live near me you can have ours, I hate it 😂 mil bought it for us as we keep hens and have lots of eggs but it’s so ugly I can’t bare to have it out!!
Maybe I haven’t sold it well…

No that’s not true. Read the instructions on your eggs, it’ll instruct you to store them in the fridge. The only reason they’re not in the Fridge in the supermarket is because they go off the shelves in a few hours.

ShiiiiiiiiiitDinosaur · 23/03/2025 17:54

I store mine a a cold cupboard under the stairs outside wall when the weather gets hotter I store them in the door of the fridge.

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 17:55

Nope

I wont bore you OP with all the other things that shouldnt be kept in the fridge in my opinion....unless you want me to of course!!!

Darkclothes · 23/03/2025 17:55

What is a ceramic chicken? Can you post a pic OP? 🤔

I've never stored eggs in the fridge! I'm mid 40's and often have eggs in the box after their best before date. No issues.

JacqFrost · 23/03/2025 17:55

I always store them in a cupboard in the kitchen. The way I look at it is in the supermarket they are on a shelve rather than in the fridge aisle.

MissRoseDurward · 23/03/2025 17:56

Delia didn't keep hers in the fridge.

ISTR that you shouldn't add an egg straight from the fridge to whatever you're mixing, as the cold egg can cause it to curdle.

Pancakeflipper · 23/03/2025 17:57

I don't store mine in the fridge. I used to then stopped about 10 yrs ago. Think my grocer told me to stop - gave me a fantastic sounding reason but totally forgotten it now.

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 17:57

My mum used to have a ceramic chicken, a mottled blue one. Loved it

Starlightstarbright4 · 23/03/2025 17:57

I keep mine in the fridge .. simply because I have a tiny kitchen gives me more storage space .

Shouldnt try to cook them direct from the cold but also I think the shells can be porous so they'll smell of cut onion and garlic and things I think

Similar to dairy products, dont keep butter near onions or garlic (and dont keep it in the fridge in any case)

Bestnottalkaboutit · 23/03/2025 17:58

USA - in fridge
UK - in cupboard

UK eggs are not washed and keep their natural protective coating. They do not need to be kept in the fridge.

There is surely no way that a supermarket would risk leaving a refrigerated product at ambient temperature, and rely on the fact they sell quickly?!

Moglet4 · 23/03/2025 17:59

Unless you’re in the USA, you should store them in the cupboard or on the top. In the UK we keep the natural protective cover on eggs; in the USA they wash it off so they can clean it with bleach which is why they need to be stored in the fridge there.

Seawolves · 23/03/2025 17:59

No, they don't need the fridge. In the USA they wash their eggs before sale so the protective coating is washed off and they need storing in the fridge, we don't wash our eggs before sale so they are fine at room temperature.

Not necessarily

Exactly! They’re stored in the aisles and then people think they need to be in the fridge, I’ve never understood this.

TonTonMacoute · 23/03/2025 18:04

I have never kept mine in the fridge. It's never been a problem, even less so these days as I get very fresh eggs from my NDN.

Roaminginthegloaming · 23/03/2025 18:08

@Taytocrisps

If you’re in the UK no you don’t store eggs in the fridge.

To test if an egg has gone bad, get a jug of cold water. Gently drop an egg in it. If it rises to the top then it’s no good.

If an egg stays at the bottom of the water jug then it’s fresh.

If an egg hovers between the bottom of the jug and the middle, then it is ok to use immediately, but best to cook it thoroughly eg. In scrambled eggs or an omelette rather than being poached or fried with a runny yolk.

I find that the larger eggs tend to go off more quickly than the smaller ones in the egg carton, possibly as they seem to contain more air?

You could say the same about milk, but it’s definitely refrigerated in every supermarket I’ve been to. And I can’t believe that the eggs in a supermarket sell out within hours every day?!

soupyspoon · 23/03/2025 18:10

I use eggs well past their use by date anyway. They're always fine

Reallybadidea · 23/03/2025 18:11

They don't need to be kept in the fridge, but they do keep longer that way. We keep ours in the fridge because I can't guarantee that we will use them before their best before date. They're still fresh past this date if I keep them in the fridge.
