Do I need to change DS passport

DS is now 16. We are going on holiday in June. He has a 5 year child passport that expires in 2027. Do I need to update it now to an adult passport? I have had a look online but I can’t find a definitive answer. All I can see is renewal instructions. Thanks.

It's fine to use until it expires.

No, you only need to renew it when it is about to expire. My DS and DD have both travelled on a child passport when they have been 18, and have had no issues. Can I Travel on my Child Passport as an Adult?

Futureisborn · 23/03/2025 17:41

Thanks both for responding so quickly.

There's nothing on passports that denotes them as 'adult' or 'child' passports. The only thing they are given is a shorter expiry date as the photos need updating more regularly.

Its fine to use until it expires. At least he'll get a 10 year one when it gets renewed

Check the regulations for the country you’re going to, most expect you to be home 3,4 or 6 months before expiry. Do it depends when it expires and where you’re going. Best bet is to check FCDO advice for that country.

Downthemarshes · 23/03/2025 17:48

As PP said its just a 'passport' - kids change a lot hence only 5 years renewal.

Well as it expires in 2027? I think they'll be fine.🤣🤣

For some reason i thought that was next year 😆

It will be fine this time. We are in a similar position and my intention is to renew a bit early, after this summer's holiday. Once a child is 16 you can renew for 10 years rather than 5 and I hope by age 26, DC will be able to cope with next renewal without me!
