Get the day back”

I‘m watching episode 4 of Adolesence and the family are saying this to each other. “Let’s get the day back”.

i haven’t heard this before.

im guessing it means “get the day back on track” after something bad happens?

Just wondering if it’s regional?

I assumed it was some sort of family phrase. In ours we say ‘the day won’t do itself’ if we wake up sick/hungover/shattered but we still have to get up and function 🤣

Could obviously be regional though, I hadn’t heard it before either.

Yes, could well be a family phrase.

I think the intention was to show the remaining 3 of them as a tight, family unit, so it could well have been that.

In took it as “don’t let the bad news steal our day from us, we’ll take back control”.

I thought she said it was a phrase that the therapist taught them?

Sounded like a good technique to me, I'm a big dweller on incidents.

@chergaryes, I was able to glean what they meant by it. I just wasn’t sure if it was in common usage as I’ve never come across it before.

@GretaGipOh, you could be right. That would make sense, they did mention the therapist a lot. The dog was barking a lot around that bit, I think I possibly missed a therapist comment, thank you, that makes sense.

It became clear it was a thing the family all learned in therapy.

That is exactly what led me here! There's a few expressions I had to look up. Like Nonce, from the same scene as "Get the day back!"

You didn't know what "nonce" means? Where are you from?

I've seen confused Americans wondering, but not people from the UK.

It means "paedophile" btw.

AllyDally · 30/03/2025 00:46

Yes I saw quite a few posts where Americans said they hadnt known what people in the UK meant when they said nonce. I didn't realise it wasn't a term used in the US, in my head I have heard it in films etc but perhaps I haven't.
