How to spend my free day in PARIS?

Sodthesystem · 22/03/2025 21:34

Hey all, would any of you seasoned Parisians care to recommend me something I may not have thought of, that you wouldn't miss for Paris?

I have a whole day free I've not filled. Was debating just going for a stroll around.

So far I've done or have booked:
Eiffel tower
Walked around Notre dame
Sainte chappelle and the neighbouring ex prison
The gallery near the Eiffel tower (the nautical/oceans one).
A ghost tour
A river cruise
A classical concert
A tour of the opera house.
And a day trip to Versailles.

I considered the marble arch but I'm not sure if I care enough? I'm not going to bother with shopping places. I don't need another museum tbh but did debate the l'oreange but it's booked up I think.

But Is the orsay worth seeing?

What about the pantheon?

I don't fancy going somewhere i'll be crammed in.

Catacombs?

The sacre ceor?

I'm massacring these names as I'm too tired to Google haha.

Anyways, any recommendations?

Something... different might be good.

Thanks :)

Arène de Lutece - a Roman amphitheatre south of the Seine in the Latin Quarter where elderly folk play boules in the ancient ruins. Very peaceful with a takeaway sandwich and coffee or thé au menthe from the nearby mosque. A hidden gem.

Go to the Louvre and stick to one gallery. Montparnasse tower restaurant has a well priced lunch menu and obviously the great view. The Bonne Marche is less snooty than a lot of stores and has a nice food hall. Bouillon Julien lovely 1930s interior and pas cher (but you should book to avoid the queue). Jardin du Luxembourg very nice and you can watch French people enjoying their massive leisure time playing Petanque or just spending the whole day reading. It looks like you've had your tour of Opera Garnier. The Philharmonie is not so grand but the seats don't kill your arse. You can now book three days in advance to go into the Notre Dame. Tickets open up at 11pm (our time) but even with a booking you'll be waiting to get in, which will eat into your day. Christian Dior museum is meant to be good but I haven't been.

When are you going? If before April, I’d get a ticket for the Dolce & Gabbana expo at the Grand Palais; it’s mind-blowing. Failing that, Louvre Couture - it’s a normal Louvre ticket, but you head to the Richelieu wing away from the tourists, and check out the most beautiful objets d’art, rooms and furniture that have the most stunning pieces of haute couture clothing interspersed. Or I’d do the Galerie Dior.

The LV Dreams expo is free, and just opposite La Samaritaine, so can be combined with a stroll across the Pont Neuf.

My favourite museum is the Jacquemart-Andre. Or, visit the free Petit Palais, just off the Champs-Elysées. It’s free, has a lovely courtyard garden, cafe, loos etc … a great pit stop in that area.

If you’re near the grand magasins on Haussmann, check out the hidden church underneath Printemps.

If you’re a foodie, then head to Les Halles. E. Dehillerin is the most amazing cookware store (beloved by Julia Child), and just round the corner is G. Detou which has all sorts of food and baking goodies.

Everyone else has pretty much covered what I wanted to say, but I just wanted to add that I love La Défense, which is especially impressive if you arrive at around nightfall. If you're there for the evening, definitely try to time it so you emerge from the Métro as it's getting dark!

That park itself looks beautiful. Did you go through it at all?

Or you @jjeoreo ?

I might hop on an underground over and have a picnic in the park :)

I feel the part that's been missing from the trip is nature.

I wonder how long it takes to saunter around it.
Would probably be beautiful at sunset.

We walked from the bottom up to the top - it's on a pretty steep hill, but didn't wander through the middle.

If you're craving nature, this is a fantastic walk, and pretty off-the-beaten track in terms of tourists

A magical, green walk along Paris's Promenade Plantée

At times 10 metres above street level, this free, scenic three-mile stroll from the Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes was the world’s first elevated park walkway – and has become a cherished part of the city

And great minds think alike jjero I have a classical concert at a church booked already :)

Thats great!

I don't remember doing the whole park, we may have done...I remember lying in the sun and someone playing the saxophone. And having a day cocktail in a cafe in the park which had great views

Rodin sculpture garden
Montmartre
One of the cemeteries
Food market

I would definitely do Rodin or a cemetery. And although you said you didn't want to shop, the inside of Galleries Lafayette is fabulous.

Yogagrandmum · 23/03/2025 09:00

The Paris catacombs

Bruisername · 23/03/2025 09:08

the restored art nouveau interior of the Samaritaine department store is beautiful and it’s right by Ile St Louis so worth popping in

MagicalMystical · 23/03/2025 09:14

Come back and tell us what you ended up doing.

My vote is another one for a mooch in the Marais.

Opihr · 23/03/2025 09:25

For something different, try 59 Rivoli, a gallery in a former squat. Free entry and easy to get to, not far from the Louvre. Lots to see in there.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/59_Rivoli

Also the Grand Mosque, really beautiful and they welcome visitors. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Mosque_of_Paris

As others have said, the fabulous department stores are worth a visit for the architecture. Galleries Lafayette and Samaritaine.

Sodthesystem · 23/03/2025 11:31

I'm actually here now :)

I've actually got a kitchen so I'm not eating out much (I know, I know, missing out on french food!) as i hate having to keep going into places for the bathroom and ending up eating and drinking and then needing to go so somehere else to use the bathroom again, it eats into so much time.

I did have crepes at the Eiffel tower though.

I'll maybe also make a point of grabbing something from a delecatecant if I pass. Not really a macaron sort of person. But savory maybe. Especially if I go for a park picnic one of the days.

Ugh so many choices! Guess I'll just have to come back for another trip someday!

I have actually passed through here at night. It reminds me of londons canary wharf a little. Can't go wrong with sparkly buildings :)

Anyone know if there's anything fun near the opera house? I've picked a bit of an awkward time so I'll probably have a few hours after it free to wander.

There's a wonderful fashion exhibition on at The Louvre now. I loved it.

NicolaCasanova · 23/03/2025 11:51

Sodthesystem · 22/03/2025 21:39

See I love the old school art like monet but then again I feel I always go to galleries so maybe I should try something else. I think I'll look into tickets though. Might have a free few hours another day if not then :)

Go to the Monet muséum,Musée Marmottan

Closed on Mondays (like all París muséums except the Louvre).
It’s in the 16th which is a very quiet, leafy area, nice to walk around (the muséum is next to the jardins de Ranelagh (« ran-lag ») park).

Vitrolinsanity · 23/03/2025 11:55

The Louvre isn't heaving anywhere except the room with the Mona Lisa. There you will encounter ten thousand people with their backs to it's taking selfies Confused

Perfume museum at Fragonard
walk down Rue de la Paix and see All the jewellers
walk down rue Sainte-Anne, the Japanese district
(look at the influencers queuing outside Cédric Grolet)
Printemps department store, you can go onto the roof terrace for the view
Walk south and go to the Palais Royal gardens where there are the Buren columns
Keep going and you’ll hit the Tuileries (if the rain holds off for a stroll) and then the Seine

Sal17690 · 23/03/2025 12:03

Rodin museum 10000% - one of my favourite places in the world.

id also wander around Le Marais and eat falafel from rue des roisiers.

and potter around a food market. I love Bastille.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/03/2025 12:03

Lucky you! Take the hop on/off city bus tours.

Sodthesystem · 27/03/2025 20:19

Hi all! I ended up going to the marmottan museum on my free day. And then the pantheon too as I hadn't managed it the day before.

Then followed up the next day with the opera house as planned but also went to the galleries Lafayette which I think are my new fave place ever lol. Just wish I was loaded so I could buy all the bling and pretty things.

I treated myself to macarons in the cafe and took in the view of Paris from the rooftop. Great way to end the trip.
