Hi.

I applied for a job that I really wanted to do in Brighton as I thought a change of scene might be nice. And the job is one I wanted to do

I've been offered the job

I'm starting to look at Brighton area a bit more seriously now.

What is Brighton like as a city to live in.

Anyone that lives there please

As you know, it’s a small quiet place. Old fashioned village.

I know what its like to visit, not what its like to live there.

is there a lot to do? Are there groups and things to go to at the weekend.

There's so much to do! I've been here over 20 years. People on the whole friendly but in a way it has less of a community feel (depending on the area you live in) as it's more focussed towards transient party types and students, so in some ways it can be harder to make friends (too cool for school in a way). It is very hectic and busy in town and after so long of being here I think I am ready for somewhere a bit less city-ish. That said you can very easily get out of town to the downs, along the seafront or even to London or somewhere else if you want to walk. It is expensive to live in for rent or property costs though. But you will never be short of things to do or events of all kinds and types!

NB I absolutely loved living here in my 20s and probably through to late 30s - had the time of my life with social life, friends, parties and so on. In my mid 40s with kids I'm a bit less sure and would prefer more of a community vibe. It's also become more deprived in that time which is a bit of a shame. But I am sure there is lots I would miss if I moved away.

Lots to do. Great city. Fun.

Beware of the poor quality housing stock. Lots of damp. Google bungaroosh

Gosh! Bungaroosh! I never knew that. Very interesting. “Probably the worst building material in the world”!

Depends on what you’re after! It has loads on offer. Loved it pre children, love it even more now. There is absolutely tonnes on. However it is expensive for parking, the roads are diabolical and the cost of housing is through the roof (no pun intended)

LilyRose88 · 22/03/2025 15:36

Brighton is great but housing is quite expensive and parking is a nightmare - expensive parking permits and limited on-street parking. I would look along the coast a little to places like Shoreham by Sea, Lancing or Worthing. Easy access to Brighton by bus and train, cheaper housing and easier parking.

FanofLeaves · 22/03/2025 15:45

All the flats have damp, it’s a big problem.

I like the vibe though.

I lived there when I was at uni and visit regularly, but if I was going to move back I’d pick somewhere near to get in and out easily by train/bus.

If you do look at places near but not in Brighton, the bus network is one of the best outside London.

Like where, do you think? I love using public transport and have friends in Brighton but don’t want to live there, very interested in a bit inland though not actually Lewes.

Brighton (Hove actually) is my home town - though I've not been back for 5 years now. It's a bloody brilliant place - SO much to do, every type of restaurant/café you can think of, lots of independent ones as well as the chains. The North Laine area is studenty and bohemian, the Lanes are good for posh shopping. The beach is a bit crap because it's mostly pebbles - and it does get extremely crowded in the summer with locals and day-trippers from London. There are theatres, cinemas, sports facilities, art galleries etc. everywhere - and the Brighton Festival showcases so much talent at all levels. The Royal Pavilion is worth at least one visit, too - and Brighton museum is interesting (as is Booth's Bird Museum)! There's a large Meet-up community covering interests from board games to jewellery-making - it helped me get a social life back after being away for a decade or so.

Having said all that - the housing prices - both rental and purchase - are eye-watering, the seagulls are feral and annoying, and it's not a place for people who don't like other people or who are judgemental about lifestyles!

It was a wonderful place to grow up and be young in - nowadays it'd all be a bit much for 65-year-old me - much prefer rural living with distant neighbours!

Ithinkyoumeanhove · 24/03/2025 22:37

Hove is amazing and so near Brighton. I wouldn't live in central Brighton now but Preston park area, Hove, Patcham all lovely. I've got 3 young kids and wouldn't choose to live anywhere else.

crockofshite · 24/03/2025 23:01

Brighton is dirty, noisy, expensive, crowded and impossible to park.

seasidedweller88 · 15/08/2025 15:32

I can comment well having lived all over London and Brighton too. Can confirm Worthing is a great place if you want:
-A lovely quiet beach
-Beautiful countryside and walking nearby
-Friendly safe community, quite diverse and queer friendly
-Very good cafes restaurants pubs and bars (both traditional and also natural wines bars and small plates etc, craft breweries for a bit of pizazz)
-Good schools
-Leafy parks
-Decent town centre with walkable shops
-Three train stations(!) and an easy enough commute straight to Victoria/East Croydon/Clapham, and Brighton of course
-Decent parking (especially compared to Brighton)
-And affordable homes! I bought my three bedroom house in a good area for only 30k more than my one bedroom flat in Brighton-For us it's been a no brainer and we love it, we're in our 30s and lots of our friends are following suit.
-Best areas: Check it out in person. Personally we're near the station on a leafy nice street, Tarring (West) is also desirable. But the best way to ascertain is to go and walk around.
