Good morning all,

I've booked to take my son on a few days to Copenhagen in April and I am looking for must do activities. He's great at travelling, loves history and food. Weird and wonderful suggestions welcome!

Tivoli gardens.

Take the train to Roskilde Viking ship museum. Kids can use woodworking tools to make a little boat. Try out rowing a Viking ship. The Copenhagen card is great!

we took ours to the Zoo. You can see some of the animals from the park if you don’t want to pay to go in. And the aquarium was a good rainy day option. There’s a round tower which they loved going up. And due to them being train made we went on the train to Malmo for the day (plus there’s lots of trams everywhere to get around). We had lots of fun just walking round as there appeared to be plenty of play parks dotted around, as well as the bigger parks. There was a great interactive museum which was great fun, and the harbour area is lovely. Sorry I can’t remember many details, it was a while ago, but there’s plenty to do for kids there.

Mine loved Copenhagen. We got the city passes and made really good use of them.

One of the few places where you can get a small version of yourself made in Lego in the Lego shop…..

icecreamscoops · 22/03/2025 08:33

Boat trip and make sure you book any restaurants as they seem to get booked up fast and be prepared to spend it's expensive!

EvelynBeatrice · 22/03/2025 08:34

Student daughter and friend - much older than 9 years (!) really enjoyed that!

Seconding the Tivolli Gardens, go to see the little mermaid. Bring lots of money, as lovely as it is, it's not a cheap break.

SoloSofa24 · 22/03/2025 08:48

Tivoli Gardens, definitely, but I wouldn't bother with the Little Mermaid statue - we found it a huge disappointment.

The Torvehallerne food market was good for browsing around and trying interesting things.

You could look into a food walking tour? We did one in Amsterdam, not Copenhagen, but it was a good way of trying out new foods without having to order whole meals, and you get snippets of local history and so on along the way.

I took DS last year, he was 12. We took the train to Malmo and went to the Museum of Disgusting Food - that was an experience not to be repeated but was good fun and he loved trying the foods on offer. We also visited the Aquarium and a museum of Illusions which was great, it was located in the main railway station and had an adult sized ball pit which we loved! Might have been called something like “The Tube”. We did the hop on, hop off bus tour too, it’s a great way to see the city and has English translation so you learn about the history as you go. We loved Copenhagen and plan to go back in a few years. Have a great time OP!

I wouldn’t bother walking up to see the Little Mermaid statue but I would take a canal boat trip and you will pass by it then.

Gloriousgardener11 · 22/03/2025 09:09

Fab Lego shop.

BathTangle · 22/03/2025 09:28

Museum of illusions: brilliant fun!

Copenhagen is great for kids! Tivoli gardens, zoo and Lego are great. Some good parks too and mine loved the outdoor playground at the architecture centre BLOX

Lavendersparkles22 · 23/03/2025 09:21

Lots of great suggestions, thanks very much 😀

Explorarium definitely! You could spend a whole day there. And maybe the Guiness World Records Museum? If you get a Copenhagen card for you then his is free, and it gets you both in to tons of museums, so you can pop in to quite a few without feeling the need to stay for ages if it turns out not to be your cup of tea.

Took our kids there a couple of years ago when DS was 11. He loved (in order): Tivoli, Roskilde Boat Museum, Aquarium, the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace. It's such a great place to go with kids.

whatandindeedwhy · 23/03/2025 13:44

Oh and how could I forget - we took one of the boat tours, mine loved that and it was a great way to see the city and a welcome extra thing to do while sat down/being shown around, after a couple of days of walking a lot

Crikeyalmighty · 23/03/2025 13:58

We lived there for 20 months- one of the most liveable cities - Tivoli is great , but also it’s 15 minutes on train to Bakken- set in woods it’s gorgeous and the worlds oldest amusement park - really old school attractions- like Hansel and gretel - Copenhagen has a great white sand beach if the weather is decent- goes all the way up the cost northwards from Amager strand. Fantastic ice cream places- soft ice coated in chocolate powder was my fave. The recycling plant that the outside is a dry ski slope plus cafe and bar is great. If Reffen is open it’s brilliant open air eat out food court plus bands andDJs etc - get to it on bus or boat.

Roskilde very nice with Viking museum - easy on train

lots and lots of canooing type water stuff and outdoorsy stuff.

amazing interactive museum up at Hellerup ( 10 minutes on train)

have a great time

I’d avoid Sweden just now. Stay in lovely safe Denmark.
