Having a wobble about my retirement plans

On paper it makes perfect sense but it's a big reduction in income and I seem to spend what I have currently!

Current income is £49k, bills are low, mortgage is paid but I have a big house and garden and often pay for help. There's only me to take care of it. For various sentimental and practical reasons I won't be moving.

I live well, with a busy social life. I don't have to think too hard about a new frock or a theatre trip for example.

I'm planning to retire very early. I have good occupational pensions I can take in full in 5 years time.

In the meantime I have £6000 from a pension, £6000 investment income and c. £3000 from some casual/freelance work.

I have a significant nest egg, which I plan to draw on to subsidise my income, but obviously the more I spend the less that will earn. I'm thinking I want to draw max £10k pa. So I'll have c. £25k to spend with no (very little) tax, NI or pension contributions to pay.

I can still live really well on that, surely? And if I struggle I can increase the freelancing, although if I'm going to end up doing a lot of work, I'd have been better off staying in my job.

Worst comes to the worst I can take my occupational pensions early, although that would be at a reduced rate.

I've thought of everything and it's going to be OK....?

Can you go part-time. Or change jobs. Maybe take in a lodger?

What is driving your desire to retire very early?

I could do all of those things if I had to but I don't think I need to.

I'm just not enjoying working and cant find any motivation, when career used to be everything to me, probably linked to menopause.

I want to go now because I've started winning age group prizes in my sport, and want to find out how good I could get, given the time to train properly.

Well it’s a case of how long is a piece of string isn’t it?🤷🏻‍♀️
I manage on far less than that with a private rental to pay for but I don’t have a lot of money left over for luxuries…

Bear in mind that with more free time on your hands you might spend more money - I know one person who retired but found herself lunching with friends 4 times a week and had to go back to work as the money was running out fast!

We’ve calculated that we need £25k a year to live on well (mortgage paid off, no debts) dh retires this year, me in 3 years time (need ni credits!)

Take out work costs and try 3 months on living off the equivalent of £25k pa each month. Just to see.

You might want to think about spitting the difference from now until retirement (say live off £35k save 10) so you have a bit of fun money to travel, train, without too much financial stress
