Are there any downsides to adding DP to my car insurance?

We don't live together.

He's a perfectly decent driver - I feel safe in a car with him, although he does have some speeding points.

We're going on a long trip and taking my car because it's more comfortable. I'm planning to add him so we can share the driving. Well split the cost. Is there anything I need to be aware of?

Just see how it impacts your policy. It’s actually cheaper for me to have Dh as a named driver than just myself. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Obviously, we are married and live at the same address and have a million years no claims.

Main thing is whether it increases or reduces the premiums

Sprogonthetyne · 20/03/2025 12:44

You can put yours and his details into a comparison website to see what the impact would be, without committing to it. If he's a good driver then it's unlikely to cost much, depends how many points and if he's made any other claims.

Just get a temp policy for the duration of your trip. Ds had his car in the garage and i just added him on to my policy for a week. Had no affect on my insurance.

Just see what effect it has on your quote. When I was younger I had a crash and it worked out cheaper to have some “clean” drivers on my policy rather than just me as it assumes they will be driving it some of the time rather than 100% me, the crasher. I had my partner, mum and a friend all on there at one point, none of them ever actually drove it

Many years ago I had my then-partner on my insurance for the same reason, we didn't live together, when we split I phoned up to remove him and my premium went up.

Like someone else has said, just ;put him on there for the duration of the trip. Companies like Veygo are used to this. I put my 23 yo son on mine for a few days when he we were taking a long trip and I didn't fancy doing all of the driving. Cost £40 for five days I think.

Makebettermen · 20/03/2025 14:14

I thought of there's not much difference in the cost it might be handy to leave him on. It's rare but e.g. I fell at a running event recently and a friend had to drive my car (and me) home.

Also, if he has his own car insurance it may cover him to drive your car providing he has your permission. I believe it would only be at Third Party, cover, but it's up to you...

Chasingsquirrels · 20/03/2025 16:21

In the same circumstances, it was cheaper for me to add DP to the policy for the remainder of the term (about 3m at the time) than the 10 days I'd rung up about.
