Car Insurance Recommendations please for Learner Driver with new (used) car

Hi,

Should firstly start by saying that I'm a non-driver, hence my lack of knowledge.. My husband has been driving for 30 years plus. I understand that having an experienced driver on the insurance can reduce the premium.

I've already sought advice on suitable cars for new drivers and I'm looking at different options on autotrade.

My Son (17) has just failed his test and wants to get a car to practice in and then maybe take his test in, obviously as well as to drive afterwards when he hopefully passes. . I know he will need learner insurance in the first instance, but all the policies I've looked at aren't suitable for main insurance. For various reasons my DH doesn't want my Son to drive his car, so we've decided this is the best way forward.

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good insurance provider please.

Thanks

Try sterling insurance, we got learner insurance for 17 yr old with myself and husband as named drivers. I rang them to make sure I knew what I was getting. I’d recommend calling places, the online system doesn’t seem set up for learner drivers with their own cars.

it was about £400, the excess are high and it becomes invalid once they pass.

We used Sterling, again with DH and I as named drivers.

Be braced for a HUGE leap in price year 1 once they pass. L driver, under £400, new driver over £3k (with a black box), 1 year no claims & first renewal with excellent black box £600

all the same basic 15 year old VW polo car, registered and owned by DS

make sure he is realistic with the car he buys, literally needs the lowest insurance like a 107 or an aygo, or i10. Then the insurance will still be about £1500 once he passes. We badged it as once he has done one year or driving to get a different car then when the insurance will be lower.

We also found that the older the car the higher the insurance due to safety features. So what you save on the car you spend on insurance, just takes time to figure out what’s best.

Mine had a hybrid policy. So they were covered as a learner, and it converted to a full policy as soon as they passed. Best thing about it, was that even while learning, they were earning their no claims bonus.
That policy cost £1500 for the year, but just done the renewal 7 months after passing the test, and it's gone down to £800.

I am not a new driver, but I’ve always had LV and I’ve found them to be excellent. Very easy to speak to an actual person, always very quick, they don’t try to sell me shit every time I ring.

Can’t remember the name of the company but on wiwikau they have one who have a policy for learners that just carries on once they pass and they get no claims starting from when they’re learning.

Thanks, we're going to look at an i10

That sounds good. Which provider was it with please?

The i10 seems like a good little car, cheap on fuel and low road tax 👍

Hellohah · 20/03/2025 19:52

We used Collingwood insurance when DS was learning. It was about £150 for 6 months

We used a broker called myfirst.com
The policy itself was with marmalade.

That’s the one I saw on wiwikau, they’ve got a discount code for them.
