Does this sound like anaemia?

DD is 11. She is autistic and has a limited diet. She has started her periods. She told me today that when she stands up she gets grey fuzzy bit in her vision, feels dizzy and her heart goes fast. She feels like her arms are weak, she is often very cold and complains of her stomach feeling funny and her head feeling weird.
I am making a GP appointment obviously, but does this sound like anaemia?

Maybe I should've posted in health...

Yes, sounds very much like anemia.

it also sounds like POTS -this is not uncommon in people with autism and in my daughter’s case, became noticeable around puberty.

I was going to say the same sounds like it could be pots but also could be anemia or even a thyroid issue. There is absolutely no way of us knowing you will need to make her a gp appointment and get a blood test

Thanks for the comments. She has had borderline hypothyroid in the past so I'll discuss that too.

I would appreciate some advice please. DD's thyroid results came back as follows:

TSH 1.89 (ref 0.6 - 4.84)
Free T4 11.9 (ref 12.5 - 21.5)

Previous thyroid results have been:
TSH 1.46, 1.48, 1.22
T4 10.1, 10.3, 12.8

The GP wasn't too bothered but then I stressed her symptoms, and that I am hypothyroid. Her symptoms are:

Feels like arms and legs are heavy and weak
Hip and back pain
Anxiety
Says brain not working
Feeling cold
Stomach feels funny
Heavy periods (she's only 11 and has had 8 so far)
Headache for days
Heart goes fast when walking or scooting
Very dizzy and feeling unwell
Intermittent Diarrhoea

He agreed to write to the paediatrician, who has come back and said that the TSH is normal so nothing needs to be done.

Other results were Ferritin 23 (range 14 - 101), RBC 5.27 (top
of the range), B12 576 (range 354 - 1599), Vit D 70 (range 51 - 125).

What do I do next? She has symptoms which are affecting her and increasing her general anxiety.

Her iron is low. It's very close to the bottom of the range. The NHS is really quite stingy about what they'll treat.

I felt very dizzy and utterly exhausted when I was anaemic. I'm sure she'll feel at least a bit better if you can get that 23 up.

Her vitamin D could be higher as well.

MaMaMaMaBaker · 10/04/2025 07:55

My heart was racing a lot too and I was breathless btw

faerietales · 10/04/2025 08:00

The NHS won’t treat low iron unless it’s outside the range - even though 23 is incredibly low. I would give her iron tablets OTC.

Thanks this is really useful. I'll start off with Spatone as she might tolerate that in juice.

Good idea. In my case, I felt improved quite shortly afterwards so hopefully the same for your DD.

Do beware the black poo. It's harmless but alarming if you aren't expecting it!
