Taking dd2 to Cardiff to check out as a potential Uni destination. Does anyone have any top tips on what to do? Also any suggestions for good places for gluten free food welcome.

The city is very walkable so I would definitely reserve some time just for wandering. There is also Cardiff Bay which is a fab area to go particularly for an evening. Cardiff Castle if you want a bit of culture.

Barry Island is just a few stops on the train or a short drive away if you’re a Gavin and Stacey fan or just want to have a nice beach trip!

What do you enjoy doing, Are you looking for entertainment or culture? Also how are you travelling around? Car or public transport

There’s lots to do in Cardiff, Bute Park is lovely with a nice little cafe at its heart. You can also get a boat ride from there to the Bay. The Arcades are nice for a stroll.
Penarth is a short train ride away, sit on the pier and have a coffee. Hope you both have a brilliant time .

Gluten free is easy in Cardiff, lots of chains including Pho and Honest Burger (both great for GF), Noglu in the market and the welsh cake shop I went in (and can't remember where it was) had GF welsh cakes which was a bonus.

There is so much to do! The city is packed with eateries and most will have gluten free. There's the castle, stores, the bay, lots of arcades. You can take a trip by boat around the bay. It's the most beautiful city! There's easy access to the Fairytale castle and the surrounding green land. Lots of beautiful suburbs and Llandaff Cathedral!

Are you staying centrally?

Definitely dinner down the Bay, have a look round the Wales Millenium Centre, you can even have a blast round the bay on a speedboat which is fun. Centrally, the park is lovely for a walk around on a sunny day. Roath park also, theres a conservatory with big pond with turtles in it. Which area of the uni are you looking round?

DH is taking DD to Cardiff this weekend, to USW. They've been a couple of times already to look round the city and she loves it, is happy that's where she wants to go. Hope your DD loves it too.

Cardiff is a lovely city, I went to uni there many moons ago. You can scope out the student union building, the main buildings for whatever subject they're thinking of doing and so on. Wander through some of the student accommodation areas. I stayed at Talybont and that's expanded a lot these days. That can give you some of the vibe of where they may end up living.

Lots on in the city centre in terms of shops and food places. Echo the Arcades and the covered market are quite unique. You can check out Cardiff Castle or some of the museums for some culture.

bringonyourwreckingball · 19/03/2025 16:18

Thanks all that’s really helpful. We will be using public transport, staying centrally.

Just to let you know there’s a Wales football match kicking off at 7.45 on Saturday evening. It’s at the Cardiff City Stadium, the trains will be busy around that time.
