Front door was left wide open (wasn’t me!)

It’s almost 3am and can’t sleep because of something slightly strange that happened earlier today.

I live in an old terraced house in London, with one flatmate. Once you open the front door there’s stairs which lead up to our home. They’re very creaky wooden stairs so you always hear footsteps.

My flatmate was out during the day, whereas I was working from home. Around 2pm-ish I was on a work call, and was training a colleague so engaged in deep conversation. I still vividly remember hearing the front door open, but just presumed my flatmate came home early (he’s a freelancer so finishes work different times). I did think briefly oh it’s strange he’s not coming up the stairs but I was busy training someone on a work call, and for all I knew he could have been distracted reading something on his phone before coming up.

Anyway my work call ends roughly 20 mins after, and because of the distraction I had forgotten that I never heard any footsteps come up. After hanging up, I walk towards the kitchen but that’s when I notice the front door is wide open. It’s never happened before, so I’m quite confused. There was no sign of anything near the door, not a delivery either (although why would they leave door open).

I messaged my flatmate if they were out and they said yes so it wasn’t them either. I also feel too embarrassed to tell them what happened because he may think I’m crazy (we’re not close friends)

It wasn’t even particularly windy either, and as I said this has never happened before.

That would really freak me out. And Is exactly the reason why my front door locks automatically when shut. I have never understood why people leave their door unlocked.

Why didnt he lock it when he left?

FancyNewt · 19/03/2025 04:05

Probably wasn't closed properly. Our door does that sometimes..

Because I was home when he left, I was wfh. Both of us only tend to lock the front door if no one is home, or during late evening before going to bed.

Ours blows open due to wind. I’m not sure why you feel embarrassed to ask house mate it’s a legitimate question. So it’s an inside door so presumably no wind/draught? if it was ajar slightly it’s possible flat mate didn’t shut it properly on which case you should say something. Fully wide open some one must have opened it. Possibly to steal if any bags/cash in sight.

Yes it’s like inswing, so wouldn’t think it was caused by wind. Also if I’m wfh the door is often unlocked (but not open) and has never blown open before.
I wonder if it could have been an opportunist who then heard my voice and noticed someone was in so quickly left without closing the door.

This could be it, yes. Talk to your flatmate and explain it to them.
