Small dog breeds help

Haven’t had a dog for a few years now, always had a big breed from moving out of home until my last girl died and life was so busy we didn’t get another.
Id now love a little scruffy dog! But im not as clued up on them as the big breeds we always had.
We have an average sized house/garden in a semi rural location. Children are older. Preferably something that isn’t known for excessive barking as husband works nights.
wouldn’t need to be left for huge amounts of time on a regular basis, and could come around in the car lots. Both kids are into ‘country pursuits’ so lots of opportunity to be outdoors getting involved. Any suggestions?
Love the wiry patterdales…

All small breeds are yappers.

Border Terrier. A good, all-round, compact family dog, not particularly yappy and popular with people who live in rural areas. Go to any country show and you'll see them in droves.

Border terrier or cairn terrier. Both fantastic little “scruffy” dogs.

The manager at my mum's assisted living has one of these. She sits in a basket in the office most of the time and seems to be very sweet natured. Not very sheddy either but all dogs shed a bit.

Parson russell terrier, they are generally calmer than jack russells. As with all terriers they need firm boundaries and lots of walks and enrichment but are wonderful souls.

This little one is (meant to be) a yorkie cross cairn terrier and I have to say she’s by far the best dog I’ve ever had! Sooo easy to train, very chilled, loving, easy going with other dogs, great with children and adults, loves playing even just by herself.

Id only had large breeds before her, but now totally sold on little yorkie mixes 😍

I agree with boarder terrors, great small / medium dogs.
Hardy little dogs with a fairly easy to look after coat and as far as I am aware no real bread health issues

They’re fab little dogs. They do need some grooming but generally they’re pretty low maintenance and not too yappy. Happy to go for miles or just have a slow potter.

Cairn Terrier, that's another good choice. My grandparents and aunt and uncle had them when we were growing up, four in total. Lovely dogs. Their coats need daily brushing and regular trimming as they can become a matted mess otherwise.

Not averse to a x-breed either, I didn’t realise how much I missed having a dog around until I found a little x-breed lost, spent the whole day with me and I was gutted that someone had claimed her from the kennels the next day. She’s adorable

My miniature poodle isn’t a yapper. If she barks, which doesn’t happen often, she’s more surprised than I am.
