Universal credit compliance interview

I’m a single mum of 2, I work full time. I was moved over from tax credits to universal credit around a year ago.

I received a message in my journal today to say that I was having a compliance telephone interview at the end of this week, and it mentioned something about savings.

I’ve been wondering all day about what this means and after reading up on savings etc I’m absolutely horrified that I didn’t declare the correct amount of savings last year. I completely forgot about an ISA that had some money in it. So in a nutshell, I declared I had under 6k in total (only just), where in fact I had closer to 7k (I have less now).

I’m guessing this is what the interview is about and I genuinely don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep until I know what will happen. I understand I’ll have to pay back any over payment but will I get in serious trouble? I feel sick.

I’m sure it will be ok if you can show it was an over sight and they will make you pay back the over payment for the time you were over 6k.

How on Earth do you prove it was an oversight though? I had a horrible nights sleep worrying about it.

You know it was. Just stick to your guns (the truth). Apologise. You may have to refund money overpaid.

Like pp said just be honest and say that it was a genuine oversight and that you will pay back any over payment.

Your savings were only a small amount over so try not to worry. It's not like you had £30,000 stashed away somewhere.

Stay calm. Explain your error. We are only talking about £17 per ap. There will be an overpayment. That is all. Explain that your savings have dropped now and let them know what to.
It will be fine.

You’ll be fine.
