Is it normal to have a lump under a bruise?

Health anxiety sufferer here so I always doubt my ‘gut’ - it’s terribly in accurate!

DS (4) has been out running crazy since the spring(ish) weather has come in. He’s been on and off his scooter and bike. His legs have developed the typical kid bruises from knee to ankle on shin.

He was crawling on the floor last night and got upset - he said a bruise on his leg was sore. I checked and sure enough, a bruise on his shin. Kind of yellow-y but on the newer end and looked a sore one. I ran my hand over it and felt there was clearly a hard lump under it! My husband thought nothing of it but I’ve felt ill since. Lumps are my anxiety spiral. He said he fell over a tyre at nursery (they have big play tyres outside).

I’m scared to google so can someone give me a hand hold? Anyone more experienced with older kids? This will be the first proper little kid rather than toddler summer we’ve had and I don’t want to ruin it for myself freaking out over every bump!

Yep, very normal

SleepingCatBlanket · 18/03/2025 09:35

Yes, normal. It's swelling because of the tissue damage. Put a bag of frozen peas on it wrapped in a tea towel for 10 min if he'll let you! If he won't, don't stress, it'll still go away!

100% normal; I'm very clumsy and walk into things a lot so I always have lumps and bumps and bruises!

Yes, it can definitely be normal. I remember my kids having them often on their shins, often from bike pedals slipping and hitting them, and also from banging themselves on climbing frames.

thank you so much everyone 😭 what a total relief!!

Yes been watching him in the garden the last half hour walking on his bike with the peddles at perfect shin height 😅

Can I also ask if it’s normal for the lump to linger a bit after the bruise clears? Bruise is that faded yellow colour this morning but the bump is still there. Trying not to freak out about it and he a normal person and give it two weeks before rushing to the doctor with it.

Yes OP. That’s normal too. The tissue is just inflamed. Put some ice on it.

Health anxiety, especially around your kids is awful, lumps as described are perfectly normal things, if truly worried about things, try where possible not to google it.

I walked into something and had a nasty bruise and a lump, the lump lasted ages, long after the bruise had gone, this was on the shin. I think the lump lasted months iirc

It’s terrible! My mum gave it to me and I’m determined not to pass it on. I’ve been doing so well with it but sometimes it rears its ugly head and new lumps are a huge trigger for me. I’ve learned not to google but still need that little bit of reassurance at times. I watch my husband remain level headed about EVERYTHING and I just wish it was me.
