(slightly light- hearted!)

Honestly, the number of times I've submitted a perfectly good dictionary word to have it knocked back with "Not In Word List". Off the top of my head:

Tench
Laird
Ling
Godet
Gudgeon
Hoopoe

There've been others; they're just the ones that spring to mind. About time they extended their blinking word list if you ask me! 😡 😅

Is this a part of a bigger picture, like your bid to win at scrabble?

Also, how cool. I didn't realise mortals could submit new words!

beAsensible1 · 17/03/2025 12:10

its mostly american english words, which is endlessly frustrating

I’ve run into this too. It’d be nice to have a British version they could use the new Oxford dictionary a la countdown.

😁 Maybe! I do actually play on a Scrabble type app which has a far more extensive word bank than QB; I've actually learned of lots of new words from it when I've submitted a chance "word" with what tiles I've had, and it's been accepted and given a definition. 🙂👍

I don't know if you can submit new words to QB. Maybe I should check that out. 🤔

The frustrating thing is, it's not even a British vs American English thing a lot of the time, though, like e.g. "hoopoe." Although I'll confess to dying a little inside every time I have to submit "color" or "labor" etc. 😭 😉

Edited

To be fair, the clue's in the title "New York Times Queen Bee"... 🤷‍♀️

The worst was ‘dickhead’ which was a pangram and the first word I saw! Nope. Not on word list 🤬

LaRevolution · 17/03/2025 12:25

I have an album on my phone of screenshots of all the words it's refused to accept 🤣 a recent selection...

Gammon
Quieten
Croft
Licence
Dado
Lurgy
Bann

Thoughts and prayers. 🙏

But... nay to "licence", yay to "license". U.S. English spellings only if you please!

I had to stop my 15 year old DD from trying to submit c**t one time. Where did my innocent little girl go...😭

Having said that, they accepted "twat" the other day. They must read Mumsnet! 😅

I've never got on with the NYT puzzles for this exact reason!! Their crosswords are a bore as well.

CrossPurposes · 17/03/2025 12:49

I had no idea that gammon was British English as I input it several times assuming I had mistyped. I think Americans are missing the glory of our words like faff, naff, and moggy. And less fun words like kirk, boak, and lido.
