Just tipped my carefully made veg stock down the sink!

Spent a few hours this afternoon blanching lots of veg so I can freeze them rather than go to waste, in a large pan one lot at a time. Carefully making sure I had another pan underneath the colander to catch the stock. Then blanching the next batch in this precious bloody vegetable water.

Obviously at the end I just tipped it down the sink. What a nob ffs.

(Before anyone asks why I buy more vegetables than we can use, I don’t. My family is in rural Lincs where most seasonal veg is plentiful and cheap and when they visit they bring us tons which I always use or give to neighbours).

Processing error.

Here, we call it a "carrots in the sink moment" after the time I neatly and finely diced a pile of carrots and scraped them off the chopping board into the washing up water, on my left, instead of the pan, on my right.

Yep did this with beef stock, a massive catering sized pot with about half a cow's bones in it, all poured into the sink by a house guest who was trying to be helpful 😳

Doitrightnow · 16/03/2025 20:49

I haven't done that, but I did once spend ages reducing tomatoes for a sauce, only to accidentally leave it in the sink and turn the tap on so it filled up with liquid again. Boo.

I’m loving these stories…..defintely makes me feel better about my kitchen howlers! I’ve also remembered the time I poured milk meant for a cup of tea in to the lamb tagine that I was making. The milk curdled but we still ate the tagine.

I literally triple check with chicken stock as it's such a waste. I feel your pain.

catsnore · 16/03/2025 21:32

Yep done that. DH did it too so we can laugh at each other.

I once dropped a lasagna on the floor as I took it out the oven. Oh the pain! Luckily the pan didn’t break so we just ate it anyway 😂

Gutting but it's so easy to do. I did this once with a carefully made turkey stock for Christmas.

My sink is next to my kitchen window and the last time I tipped the veg water down the plughole (meant for gravy making) I shouted "bastard!!" at my stupidity. Thing was the kitchen window was open on that hot day and my neighbour was walking by. Several yards away but she heard me shouting and called across asking if I was ok. (I've thrown out the veg water more than once 🙁

I am so glad that I am not the only one who has cracked an egg into the bin! I even said 'what the hell?!' as I did it.

Speaking of kitchen mishaps, DS age 16 helpfully topped up the sugar bowl not with golden granulated sugar…but semolina Confused Nice cup of tea, not.

Yep I made chicken stock, left it on the side to cool and DH threw it down the sink trying to be helpful. I've also thrown cooked pasta into a sink full of washing up water.

It’s definitely some sort of weird processing error/malfunction @PickAChew
Shows how much we do on autopilot!

I tipped the rice into the sink the other day I was using to make special fried rice.

I was sooooo tempted to just scrape it all back up and pretend I'd not done it. I didn't- I found one of the emergency microwave rice bags - it wasn't nice.
