just been charged £240 to get a three seater sofa and one chair out of my first floor flat and left outside on the driveway, everyone is saying i got ripped off and it shouldn't have been that expensive so just thought i would ask what that would cost approx where you are? I did try to get quotes beforehand but nobody replied to messages and i needed it out that day.

Asking because I'm moving soon and will have a lot more than that to get out and now wondering if its going to be a lot more than i thought..

That does sound very expensive in my opinion

Neveranynamesleft · 16/03/2025 14:14

If you have already paid it then I doubt there is much you can do about it now.

Gribbit987 · 16/03/2025 14:17

You will always pay a premium if you need something done immediately.

Try AnyVan next time. You will get a selection of quotes to compare.

DenholmElliot11 · 16/03/2025 14:19

Yes you were ripped off. I assume you paid the requested amount though? Not really much you can do now.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 16/03/2025 14:21

You've still got the cost of disposal so yes, you've paid over the odds. That said, you said it needing doing that day and were prepared to pay that much so it must have been worth it to you and you didn't have any bargaining power.

Blackcountrychik83 · 16/03/2025 14:21

Jeez yes you was ripped off . I only paid £120 to have a whole van full of stuff moved 2 miles in a van never mind a sofa and chair down your garden .

Maybe ask on fb for a couple of quotes . I’m sure you could get a teenager who would love to earn a bit of pocket money moving stuff outside for you .

Absolutely ripped off. Local council would do it for far, far cheaper. They tend to pick up outside of homes but they can support if you can't move stuff yourself.

My council have a bulky waste collection 4 items for £20. They have to be on the property perimeter and easily accessible. Also covered from elements if fabric. They won’t enter your property even if disabled. Also, they only book on a specific day a week - your collection day.

It isn’t a comparable service and is obviously going to be much cheaper. Pointless comparison.

It's not a pointless comparison. My council will come into your home if you can't get the pieces out yourself. It's £37 for four items here and they have 2 days a week as an option. So not a pointless comparison at all as presumably all councils are different. Regardless, the OP was ripped off.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 16/03/2025 15:16

I paid £60 for removal and disposal of 2 king sized mattresses yesterday, licensed waste guy. I'd say you were very much ripped off

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 16/03/2025 15:18

If you were my neighbour I would have helped you do this for free. That’s far too expensive just to move something without including disposal.

biscuitsandbooks · 16/03/2025 15:24

Massively ripped off.

I'd help a neighbour with this for free if they asked.

mummyh2016 · 16/03/2025 17:06

It’s expensive however I wouldn’t say you were ripped off, you agreed to the price at the time. You’ll always pay a ‘desperate tax’ when arranging things like this last minute.
