Question about Stanley Cups for kids

My daughter will be 8 soon and wants a Stanley Cup for her birthday. I have decided but not told her that I would buy an off brand Taylor Swift one first to see how she gets on with it and get her a proper one for Christmas if she likes it. The thing is, she wants one that is the traditional shape with the straw to use for school; I just don’t see how practically people use them for that? It won’t fit in the cup net on the side of her bag and it has the straw so I don’t want to put it in in case it leaks. How do people (ie kids) take them to school and not have leaking? Do they carry them there and back? Thank you for any advice!!

I think wise to get the off brand one. I don’t know how they carry them around

I wouldn't give an 8yo a £40 water carrier for school. It will get lost/stolen.

I haven't worked out how you close the lid due to the straw being in the way. You can take the straw out, but then where do you store it so that it's kept clean for the next time you want a sip?

My 10 year old got an unbranded one for her birthday (from a friend not us!), she loves it but I think they’re ridiculous things. It couldn’t go in her bag because of the straw and they all just seem to carry them around and leave them on the tables in class. Getting a cheaper one is a good idea and hope the trend has died out by Christmas!

So this is NOT about ice hockey?

They take them empty and fill them up when they get to school. Make sure she can do it herself.

They are super annoying as they take up so much space but it’s always been the way. I wanted bottle tops on my school shoes like Bros when I was her age and my mother would not let me have them.

You can get rubber straw caps and stoppers to seal the straw hole on Amazon (they should come with these, major gripe)

Wouldn't send a £40 item to school.
Btw they are useless.

TokyoSushi · 17/03/2025 10:21

Get one of the cheaper ones, she'll realise soon enough that it's a pain to take to school and that'll quickly fade out!

Have you talked to her about why she wants one and explained what you can buy for £40? It sounds like she's either seen them on the internet or heard from friends that she needs one to fit in. This might be a good opportunity to talk to her about mindless consumerism and buying a brand to fit in, rather than because you want it- and to take her to a toy shop and show her what age appropriate toys she could have for the same price.
