Owners of Pointer breed dogs - maintenance question.

How often do they need grooming and what sort? Whenever I see a Pointer, Weimaraner, GSP etc they look immaculate. I suppose having a short close coat helps their smart appearance. Do they need a regular shampoo and occasional trim or just a polish every now and then? GSPs with large brown or black markings seem to be especially glossy!

Pictures welcome!

My friends 2 pointers only get the mud washed off them. They are complete water dogs, so often get themselves clean on a daily basis! Absolutely lovely dogs! Here is one mixing business with the pleasure of retrieving!

We have a vizsla- he only gets bathed when he gets muddy or rolls in fox poo. You do have to be careful that their ears are kept clean as they are dirt magnets. Claws generally kept short by walking - occasionally we clip them ourselves.

A hose down if they’ve rolled in something disgusting.
Mud mostly falls off them so if they get muddy at the beginning of a walk it’s slid off by the time you get home.

We have a pointer/spaniel cross. Smooth coated and pointer body just a bit smaller. He's a lovely boy! Bathed very very occasionally when his white bits aren't white any more. But he's kind of self cleaning. I cut the grass the other day and he likes to drop the ball in front of the mower so I need to kick it for him. His feet went green but it just magically disappears after a few hours. He's mainly white too. Never needed to clip his nails other than his dew claws and he's 4 now. He's so daft he's very compliant (lies on his back wagging his tail whilst I do it) so not a problem.
The main thing is the coat shedding which has really surprised me. His tail doesn't stop wagging when he's awake and it seems it sheds a phenomenal amount of hair, everywhere! I never had such a dog hair issue with my spaniels or Shih Tzus! I pulled the bed out the other day to clean under it. Was shocked at the amount of white hair under there, admittedly I can't remember the last time I did it but even so... 1 1/2 sharkfuls worth... must do it more often in future...

Thanks all. The thing with any domestic pet is their groomed-out coat can be put outside for the birds to use as nest lining. As long as the pets haven't been treated with toxic flea treatment.

We've had English Pointers and GSPs in the past. They don't need grooming really. Ours always got hosed down in the garden after a muddy walk and a quick dry off with a towel on the way in. Shampoo only if they'd rolled in something horrible.

But it doesn't help to brush them. They shed little needle like hairs everywhere which stick in fabric and cannot be easily brushed off, but you can't really reduce that much by brushing them.
